Senior Planning Officer (Major Projects)

A public sector client based in Staffordshire is recruiting for a full‑time, temporary Senior Planning Officer to join their Planning Services team on an ongoing basis. Ideal candidates have experience working within a local authority planning environment.

The Role

The key purpose of this role is to provide professional planning services in accordance with the City Council’s business needs, focusing on supporting major and complex developments through the planning process.

Key Responsibilities
  • Providing expert advice on planning law, policy, and guidance in line with best practice and Council objectives.
  • Assessing and recommending decisions on complex major planning applications and associated legislation.
  • Supporting regeneration projects and investment initiatives by providing professional planning input.
  • Advising senior officers on development management considerations for major redevelopment opportunities.
  • Acting as an expert professional witness at public inquiries, hearings, or examinations.
  • Preparing and presenting reports to Council committees and regional planning groups.
  • Liaising with developers, landowners, and other key stakeholders to facilitate high‑quality sustainable development.
Candidate Requirements
  • Relevant degree in planning or a related subject.
  • Eligibility for Chartered Membership of the RTPI (Royal Town Planning Institute).
  • Proven experience managing and determining major or complex planning applications within a local authority setting.
Beneficial Skills
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Strong understanding of development management systems and planning policy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with senior officers, members, developers, and the public.

The client is offering £48 per hour under an Umbrella LTD, Inside IR35 arrangement (approx. £40 per hour PAYE) for this full‑time temporary position.
