About the role

At Balfour Beatty, we are proud to be part of the delivery team for HS2, the UK's flagship high-speed rail programme, and a once-in-a-generation project shaping the future of sustainable transport and construction innovation.

We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Planner to join our Regional Buildings team, supporting the delivery of five reinforced concrete buildings that will house critical mechanical & Electrical (MEP) plant infrastructure along the route. These highly engineered buildings form an integral part of HS2’s operational systems and represent a unique blend of heavy civil engineering and complex building construction.

If you’re a talented Senior Planner we want to hear from you. You will be responsible for creating and managing comprehensive construction project schedules, optimizing resource allocation, and ensuring timely project delivery. Collating, assessing progress for inclusion in the Programme for Acceptance and supply chain programmes will form a significant part of this role. The Planner’s scope includes meticulous scheduling and strategic coordination to facilitate successful project outcomes.

What you’ll be doing

Working independently or part of the planning team:

  • Ensuring that the programme content is functionally compliant with the planning
    procedures and guidance.
  • Tender: Develop and agree by collaboration a logical sequence and methodology ensuring that the most efficient design, procurement & construction strategy is adopted for the delivery of the works.
  • Produce and document planning deliverables, including programs, planning philosophy, presentations, and reports. Also, generate the Tender Programme and supporting information in accordance with tender requirements.
  • Contract: At the contract stage, the Planner is responsible for producing, managing, and maintaining the Contract Programme in accordance with planning procedures under the guidance of the Planning/Project Lead.
  • Displaying and evaluating the project critical path and advise the project team of the results and any appropriate corrective action.
  • Producing and maintaining project baselines and execute the change control process as appropriate.
  • Resource Management: Skilled in managing labour, equipment, and materials efficiently to meet project objectives while minimizing costs and delays.
  • Contract Management: Manage contract programmes with subcontractors and suppliers, monitoring performance, and resolving contract-related issues.
  • Data Analysis: Aid the planning team to produce project data and key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress, identify deviations, and make data-driven decisions for project improvement.

  • Knowledge in project scheduling, including the ability to create, manage, and optimize project schedules using industry-standard tools.
  • Understanding of various forms of tender and contract documents, and specifications.
  • Understanding of project management methodologies.
Experience
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully planning and managing projects from initiation to completion using planning software like P6/Asta.
  • Previous experience in Rail sector would be an advantage
  • Previous experience in managing relationships with project stakeholders, demonstrating effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in construction or other sectors with transferable skills that align with the demands of the construction field
