Job summary

A leading NHS trust is looking for a Senior Phlebotomist based at St Richards Hospital in Chichester. The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting blood samples, maintaining patient safety, and providing compassionate care. Applicants must have Phlebotomy experience and GCSE qualifications in English and Mathematics. The role requires working varied shifts and occasional weekend duties. Salary ranges from £24,465 to £26,598 per annum pro rata.

Applications are invited from motivated, enthusiastic individuals for the above post at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. Your duties as a Senior Phlebotomist will be based at St Richards Hospital covering wards, adult & paediatric outpatients and associated clinics. You may also be required to work at Worthing and Southlands (Shoreham) Hospitals depending on the needs of the service.

Experience / knowledge of venepuncture techniques desirable.

(Band 2 trainee position will also be considered)

We are willing to consider for Band 2 Trainee position for suitable candidate.

The ability to work a varied shift pattern is required and this will include occasional Bank Holiday sessions or additional weekend duties.

Monday to Sunday from 07.00 until 17.00

Main duties of the job

Through the collection of blood samples from patients, to assist the workforce of Pathology in providing a specialised, diagnostic service contributing to the clinical care of the patient, to enable diagnosis and subsequent monitoring of the effectiveness of treatment given.

Using skills gained through the Phlebotomy training scheme, the individual will be expected to develop judgement and utilise learnt specialist skills and scientific knowledge to assist in the provision of a high quality and timely Phlebotomy service.

The Phlebotomy service covers all areas of the Trust including satellite units such as Children's Assessment unit / Paediatrics Outpatients Department.

Job responsibilities

As this role does not meet the minimum criteria for visa sponsorship under the current UK immigration rules, we are unable to provide sponsorship for this post.   • Having received the necessary Phlebotomy training and achieved an appropriate level of competence, to take blood samples from patients, under supervision, which will assist in the provision of routine analysis of specimens within Pathology in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Phlebotomy training manual.
  • To maintain high standards of safety ensuring the Health & Safety of self, other staff, patients, and visitors to the laboratory.
  • To perform phlebotomy ensuring minimal distress and discomfort to patients always.
  • To ensure high standards of accuracy when recording, transcribing, and checking patient demographics in particular the labelling of blood tubes.
  • To seek advice from senior staff in response to patient enquiries and offer appropriate guidance strictly according to departmental policies.
  • To actively participate in team meetings and to inform effectively both verbally and at hand-over.
  • To communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and carers to obtain consent for venepuncture to take place.
Person Specification
Education/Qualifications
  • GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics at grade C / level 5 or above.
Knowledge
  • Extensive knowledge working within an NHS enviroment.
  • Anatomy and Physiology relevant to phlebotomy.
  • Minimum of 1 years Phlebotomy experience working within an inpatient/outpatient environment.
Information resources /IT
  • Experience using Pathology IT Systems ICE, and patient booking system.
  • Proficient and accurate computer skills including data entry and word processing.
  • Knowledge of data protection, data quality and patient confidentiality.
