Job summary

QinetiQ Group plc in Gosport/Haslar is seeking a Senior Mechanical/Structural Engineer to lead design and analysis from concept through testing and production. You will deliver structural components for submarines and multi-material assemblies in demanding environments, mentoring others and driving collaboration across technical teams.

Apply deep knowledge of mechanical/structural engineering, CAD (Siemens NX or SolidWorks) and FEA on metal and composite structures, with experience to industry

Qualifications

  • Thorough understanding of safety regulations and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Experience designing structures to recognised industry standards (Maritime, Defence, or Civil).
  • Skilled in designing both metallic and composite structures.
  • Competent in performing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on complex structures.
  • BEng in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture or equivalent demonstratable experience.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a Senior Engineer, combining subject matter expertise and sound engineering judgement to solve problems. Breakdown complex tasks and then execute the planned schedule of work. Work with the Project Management community to task and control work conducted by technical teams
  • Develop the capabilities in the areas you are working in; mentor others to improve the knowledge of your areas of expertise within the wider engineering and technical communities
  • Encourage increased collaboration across the Group/wider technical teams. Work with other functions (e.g. Safety Engineering) to deliver the technical programme of work ensuring compliance with statutory, regulatory, company and project-specific processes
  • Utilise opportunities with partner organisations to identify and then develop joint technical strategies to expand our combined customer offering; this will include supporting Business Development and Sales strategy
  • Ensure projects/programmes you are responsible for are conducted in a safe manner, highlighting hazards and potentially unsafe practices
  • Ensure that Governance is applied consistently across the technical programmes where you are involved; act as a peer/independent reviewer for other projects or programmes of work where suitable
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and structural engineering, including design processes and manufacturing principles
  • Thorough understanding of safety regulations and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Proficient in CAD software, particularly Siemens NX or SolidWorks
  • Experience designing structures to recognised industry standards (Maritime, Defence, or Civil)
  • Skilled in designing both metallic and composite structures

Job description

As a Senior Mechanical/Structural Engineer, reporting to the Principal Engineer, you'll be responsible for the design and analysis of components and assemblies from their initial concept through to testing and final production. Day-to-day, you'll be delivering technical projects relating to the structural design of submarine propulsors. You'll work with other team members supporting the development of complex multi material assemblies, for use in demanding environments. Your responsibilities will include:
