Job description

About the Opportunity

We are looking to recruit and develop career minded people to bolster our well-established and growing multi‑discipline engineering delivery capability to meet opportunities in the defence industry. Our projects include developing solutions in complex and exciting environments, in support of the UK nuclear submarine fleet; the air, land and sea defence establishments; and both existing and new build manufacturing facilities.

As the demand for our services continues to grow, you will provide mechanical support to key client projects. Being part of a several hundred strong team across the UK, you will work within the smaller and growing Mechanical Engineering team based in Glasgow, Bristol or Reading.

This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer who wants exposure to a wide range of engineering areas and phases. Our involvement with projects across the country continues to expand, so there will be many opportunities to develop and tailor your own career path.

You will preferably have experience of working in defence or a similar industry, but those with relevant mechanical design experience looking to work in a technically challenging environment are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide mechanical engineering support to clients during development and analysis of mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Produce documentation including diagrams; technical specifications; supporting calculations and analysis; design evidence and justifications.
  • Provide leadership and problem‑solving ability to influence key design decisions.
  • Provide a professional engineering service to clients and undertake design reviews and presentations where necessary.
  • Liaise with cross‑disciplinary engineering teams and stakeholders.
  • Encourage development of less experienced engineers within the team.

People are our greatest asset, and we offer a competitive package to retain and attract the best talent.

In addition to the benefits you’d expect, UK employees also receive free single medical cover and digital GP service, family‑friendly benefits such as enhanced parental leave pay and free membership of employee assistance and parental programmes, plus reimbursement towards relevant professional development and memberships.

Work‑life balance and flexibility is a key focus area for us. We’re happy to discuss hybrid, part‑time and flexible working hours, patterns and locations to suit you and our business.

Here’s What you Need
  • BEng (Hons) / MEng or equivalent in a relevant STEM degree.
  • CEng or on a career path to achieving CEng status. We will support you in this process.
  • Technical report writing skills and professional attitude.
  • Experience in the design/delivery of mechanical systems or equipment through the design lifecycle.
  • Piping/pump systems, mechanical handling equipment, mechanical‑structural apparatus.
  • Familiarity with engineering software packages such as AutoCAD or similar.
  • Willingness to learn and understand new systems and equipment to meet project deliverables.
Desirable
  • Familiarity with design and safety standards. Knowledge of Defence Standards or similar may be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Knowledge and experience of specifying mechanical systems or equipment.
  • Experience in the production of design deliverables, e.g. equipment sizing calculations in any of the following: heating / cooling / fan sizing / pumps / compressors / hydraulic plants / piping etc.
  • Experience with liaising and coordinating with other design disciplines.
  • Willingness to travel and attend key meetings to build relationships.
Our Culture

Our values are built on a strong foundation of safety, integrity, and respect for every individual. People are at the heart of our mission, and we believe in supporting one another through a culture of care and collaboration.
