Senior Mechanical Engineer

Salary: £52,647+ depending on experience.

Job Description
  • Lead the development of solutions to technical issues as a member of a project team, reporting to a Technical Lead and directly to the customer.
  • Develop design solutions based on customer requirements, validating and verifying them through the design process.
  • Review and check design work and technical reports, providing help and direction to less experienced engineers.
  • Carry out technical analysis and investigations, and prepare reports with recommended solutions to support problem resolution and improve engineering capability.
  • Lead and/or support solutions to production and manufacturing technical queries raised by suppliers, internal stakeholders (e.g. Operations Team), and non-conformance reports within required project time frames.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
  • Degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline, or high-level engineering experience, with proficiency in writing and reviewing technical reports and specifications.
  • Design experience in a multi‑disciplined, production and/or manufacturing environment, answering technical queries and managing non‑conformance reports.
  • Experience performing structural/stress analysis and familiarity with product data management (PDM) tools for configuration management.
  • Working knowledge of technical office processes, standards, and standard instructions (e.g. Business Management System, Life Cycle Model).
  • Familiarity with engineering drawing standards, geometric dimensioning, and tolerancing.
Desirable Skills and Experience
  • Working experience using CAD software (CREO Parametrics) and PLM software (Teamcenter).
  • Previous production, manufacturing, machining, welding, casting, and assembly experience.

About the Weapon Systems UK Mechanical Engineering Team

As part of BAE Systems Platforms and Services sector, Weapon Systems UK designs, develops, manufactures, and supports artillery systems, naval guns, and provides engineering capability to the wider BAE Systems business. Within the Mechanical Engineering team, you may support technical changes to our existing product portfolio (e.g. M777 towed howitzer, 4.5” MK.8 MOD 1 Naval Gun, AS90 Self‑Propelled Howitzer & 105 Light Gun) through analysis, concept design, tests, and trials. This role allows you to propose innovative ideas and solutions for future weapon platforms.
