Job summary

Motorola Solutions UK Limited seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to design enclosures and mechanisms for harsh environments, using SolidWorks. You will collaborate with multiple teams across hardware and production, ensuring manufacturability and documentation readiness.

You will inspect drawings, support prototyping and testing, and travel between Ware and the machine shop as needed. Strong attention to detail and self‑motivation are essential.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of material properties, fabrication techniques, coatings and fasteners.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with internal machine shop and suppliers to meet objectives.
• Produce production-quality drawings, BOMs and assembly docs.
• Create parts, assemblies and mechanisms using machining, 3D printing, laser cutting and folding.
• Estimate work effort for proposed tasks and plan work.
• Review drawings to ensure quality before manufacture release.
• Develop designs and test fixtures; support validation and testing.
• Perform mechanical testing and report results for components and products.
• Lead design improvements during Engineering Change Requests (ECR).
• Support other engineering disciplines to meet project goals.
• Communicate with other teams to align on needs and constraints.
• Operate in a hybrid Ware office environment.

Job description

The Specialty Camera Engineering team based in Ware, UK is responsible for developing cameras for long range surveillance applications, such as border or coastal security. The products are aimed at public and commercial safety. The team is responsible for the development of the complete products, including hardware, firmware and mechanics and takes care of the whole development life‑cycle that includes development, testing and maintenance of the systems we build.

Motorola Solutions is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Silent Sentinel team in order to facilitate the development of ongoing projects. The successful candidate will be self‑motivated and can have autonomy in their work with the confidence to reach out when support is required. This person will collaborate with various stakeholders within and external to the engineering department, as they work to produce reliable products and production methods. The role of this person is primarily to design enclosures and mechanisms, fit for harsh environments, including (but not limited to) –40°C, marine conditions, and MIL STD. Designs will be produced on CAD (Solidworks) and be translated to both technical drawings, and build guides. These must be legible to all who will read them in the production, quality and manufacturing sectors. Finally, the successful candidate will have a great attention to detail as they will be inspecting drawings before they are released for manufacture. This attention to detail will be critical when testing prototypes or when assisting production with troubleshooting. Anyone successful enough to be invited for an interview must be able to demonstrate a basic portfolio with relevant work.

• Collaborate with internal machine shop (different site) and suppliers to achieve company objectives
• Produce supporting documentation to allow for an independent production team.
• Use 3D modeling software to design parts, assemblies and mechanisms using a variety of materials and fabrication technologies (most notably, machining, 3D printing and laser cutting and folding).
• Estimate amount of work required to complete proposed tasks.
• Create detailed production-quality fabrication drawings, design documentation, and assembly drawings for new and existing components.
• Drawing and design review to ensure the team delivers high quality material to stakeholders.
• Producing specification and development of designs, prototypes, and test fixtures
• Mechanical Testing and verification of parts/products and report creation
• Design improvement during the ECR (Engineering Change Request) process
• Support other engineering disciplines in the department to ensure they can meet their objectives.
• Communicate effectively with other engineering teams to ensure the designed product takes into consideration their needs.
• Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement (office located in Ware).

• Fluency in English (spoken and written)
• CAD experience in Solidworks (3D modelling, 2D technical drawings, BoM production)
• Knowledge of material properties, manufacturing techniques, plating methods, coatings and fasteners
• Ability to travel between Ware (main office) and Sandy (machine shop) on short notice.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise documentation
• Self‑motivated with the ability to learn quickly and independently while also work within a team
• A demonstrated pragmatic approach to problem solving
• Ability to design for manufacture and assembly
• Ability to implement designs that are ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing would be an asset
• Familiarity with IP ratings and methods of achieving IP67
• Being able to design and carry out relevant tests to help achieve high product quality
• Ability to justify design decisions with calculations, analysis and written documentation.
• Experience in FEA and thermal simulation would be advantageous.
