Job summary

SL Engineering Consultancy Ltd is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to oversee daily engineering activities, support the maintenance team and ensure production equipment operates safely and efficiently.

Your role includes leading and mentoring the engineering team, organising maintenance to minimise downtime, and hands-on fault finding with machinery. The ideal candidate has an apprenticeship/NVQ Level3 and strong experience in a manufacturing setting.

Job description

Salary: £67,500 per annum

Hours: Days, Monday to Friday

Contract: Full-time, Permanent

We're looking for someone who isn't afraid to get stuck in, can lead by example and has the technical knowledge to support a busy engineering department.

THE ROLE OF THE SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER:

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you'll play a key role in overseeing daily engineering activities, supporting the maintenance team and ensuring production equipment operates safely and efficiently.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Leading, supporting and mentoring members of the engineering team.
• Organising and prioritising maintenance activities to minimise production downtime.
• Remaining hands‑on with machinery maintenance, fault finding and engineering activities.
• Supporting planned preventative maintenance and TPM activities.
• Identifying recurring equipment failures and implementing long‑term improvements.
• Conducting root cause analysis.
• Coordinating engineering shift reports and maintenance documentation.

THE IDEAL SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER:

We're looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer with strong technical knowledge and the confidence to take on additional responsibility.

• Previous experience in a mechanical maintenance or engineering role within a manufacturing or industrial environment, including apprenticeship/NVQ Level3 at a minimum.
• Strong mechanical fault‑finding and diagnostic skills.
• Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
• An understanding of electrical equipment and control systems.
• Experience supporting, mentoring or leading engineering teams.
• Experience with preventative maintenance and continuous improvement.

Previous leadership experience would be advantageous, although engineers who are ready to progress into a more senior position are encouraged to apply.

PACKAGE OFFERED TO THE SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER:

• 38 hours per week – DAY SHIFTS!
• Monday to Thursday: 7:00am – 3:30pm
• Friday: 7:00am – 1:00pm
• Start and finish times may vary depending on business requirements.
• £67,500 annual salary
• Permanent, full-time position
• Early Friday finish
• 33 days' annual leave, including bank holidays
