Job description

Senior Mechanical Engineer (Data Centre Design) – Bristol, Birmingham or London (hybrid). Permanent.

This role is for a technically-minded, hands‑on designer who thrives on the complexity of critical infrastructure. You will lead the mechanical design for large‑scale data centres, ensuring maximum efficiency, reliability, and cooling performance.

Role Overview

Location: London, Birmingham, or Bristol (Hybrid).
Basis: Full‑time, Permanent.
Focus: Critical Cooling, HVAC, BMS, and Sustainability in Data Centres.

Key Responsibilities
  • Hands‑on Design: Producing detailed mechanical design packages, including cooling systems, ventilation, and pipework layouts.
  • System Architecture: Designing high‑density cooling solutions, such as CRAC/CRAH units, Chilled Water Systems, and Indirect Evaporative Cooling.
  • Technical Calculations: Performing heat load calculations, CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, and psychrometric charting to ensure thermal stability.
  • Innovation: Implementing sustainable designs to improve PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) and reduce carbon footprints.
  • Site Presence: Attending site visits and commissioning phases to troubleshoot installations and ensure design intent is met.
Experience & Qualifications
  • Technical Depth: Proven experience in the mechanical design of Critical Environments (Data Centres, Labs, or Cleanrooms).
  • Software Proficiency: Expert‑level skills in Revit MEP, AutoCAD, and industry‑standard thermal calculation software (e.g., IESVE or Hevacomp).
  • Hands‑on Mindset: A track record of "getting into the weeds" of a design rather than just managing sub‑consultants.
  • Education: BEng/MEng in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services.
  • Professional Status: Chartered (Ceng) or working towards it via CIBSE/IMechE.
Personal Attributes
  • Problem Solver: You enjoy the "puzzle" of fitting complex mechanical plant into tight spatial constraints.
  • Collaborative: Ability to work seamlessly with Electrical Engineers and Architects to ensure holistic site design.
  • Local Flexibility: Comfortable with a hybrid working model based out of our London, Birmingham, or Bristol hubs, with occasional travel to client sites.
Why Join Us?

We offer the opportunity to work on some of the largest digital infrastructure projects in Europe. You'll have the autonomy to drive design decisions and the support of a multi‑disciplinary team that values technical excellence over corporate bureaucracy.
