Job summary

Bridges Electrical Engineers seeks a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead design and delivery of complex water and wastewater infrastructure projects. You will mentor engineers and shape sustainable assets for AMP 8/9 across England and Wales.

The role involves concept-to-construction delivery, 2D/3D GA designs, site attendance, and presenting technical aspects to clients. Hybrid work with Bath/Newport/Swansea offices and flexible arrangements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (HNC/HND acceptable).
• Experience in mechanical systems design and site GA design (2D/3D).
• Strong project coordination and team leadership.
• Experience with chemical dosing and water quality monitoring.
• Proficient with Autodesk 3D CAD and MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and specification for water/wastewater systems.
• Oversee delivery from concept through construction support.
• Develop detailed specifications and interfaces between disciplines.
• Mentor junior staff and contribute to technical presentations.
• Attend sites and liaise with project managers and commercial teams.

Role purpose

Are you a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a background in the water and wastewater sector? Due to continued success building on our existing framework agreements and a confident growth plan in AMP 8 and AMP 9, across all 10 major water and wastewater companies in England and Wales, we’re seeking a confident, innovative professional to lead the design and delivery of complex infrastructure projects.

Join our dynamic and growing team as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a passion for engineering sustainable assets which our valued customers are proud to own and operate.

Role is available in our Midsomer Norton Office (Head Office), or Newport office or our Swansea office.

In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of challenging projects, from innovative treatment systems to infrastructure upgrades, all while collaborating with a supportive, forward-thinking team of 40+ engineers. Your expertise will shape sustainable engineering solutions, mentor junior staff, and influence key project decisions.

The Role

• Mechanical design and specification of water and wastewater treatment systems, pumping stations, and associated infrastructure.
• Oversee project delivery from concept through to detailed design and construction support.
• Developing detailed specifications for survey requirements, equipment, systems and interfaces between disciplines, ensuring they meet client requirements and industry standards
• Producing mechanical designs using project specifications, standard requirements, outline scopes of work, and/or site investigations
• Innovate, challenge, and consider continuous improvement across projects and designs
• Support the addressing of challenges encountered across our teams, bringing your unique experience to assist in defining solutions.
• Assisting less technical team members with the specification of technical plant and machinery
• Liaison with project managers and commercial teams
• Attending site, both during and after projects
• Producing and carrying out technical presentations during client visits and meetings.

We offer a hybrid model of 3 days in the office and 2 days at home, and we also offer some flexible working.

Roles are available in our Bath (Head Office), or Newport offices and will relate to the clients those offices support.

This is based on a 40hr contract Monday to Friday.

Essential

• Experience working in a senior mechanical design role.
• Relevant engineering qualification such as a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, HNC, or HND.
• Experience in:
  • Mechanical systems design
  • Site general arrangement design, 2D and/or 3D
  • Design project coordination, leading and supporting teams
  • Chemical dosing
  • Water quality monitoring
• Autodesk 3D CAD packages
• Using Microsoft packages
• Specific water industry-based design experience.
