Senior Mechanical Design Engineer—Role Overview

At Oxford Instruments Andor, we accelerate scientific advances through high‑performance imaging solutions. We seek a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the mechanical design and detailing of high‑precision parts, sub‑assemblies, and customer solutions for our Imaging & Analysis product line.

Responsibilities

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will:

  • Design and detail mechanical components to tight tolerances for precision applications.
  • Conduct tolerance and vibration/thermal analyses to support long‑term stability.
  • Ensure designs meet regulatory requirements (EMC, Medical Device, Safety, LVD).
  • Implement DfX best practices to optimize manufacturability and reliability.
  • Build prototypes, evaluate performance, and iterate designs.
  • Document designs with detailed assembly instructions, maintain revision control of drawings and documents, and develop cost estimates.
Qualifications
  • BSc/BEng in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. iMechE IEng accreditation a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years of product‑development experience in mechanical engineering.
  • Proven experience in:
  • Design of precise, tight‑tolerance mechanisms.
  • Tolerance analysis and design for long‑term stability (vibration, thermal).
  • Design for regulatory approval (EMC, Medical Device, Safety, LVD).
  • DfX implementation.
  • Prototype build and assessment.
  • Documenting designs with revisions and cost estimation.
