Job Overview
The primary purpose of the Senior Management Accountant is to provide management and financial information and support to their assigned Directorates. They are responsible for the delivery of operational financial management within a Directorate, providing advice, analysis and interpretation to Directors and budget holders to underpin effective decision making and performance management.
Key Responsibilities
Finance & Business Planning
- Produce summary financial plans for services ensuring they reflect strategic objectives.
- Identify financial risks and produce a downside financial plan and help to identify mitigations.
- Lead the annual and periodic detailed budget setting processes in conjunction with budget holders and the senior management team.
- Provide financial input into the preparation of Directorate or Trust wide business cases.
Reporting
- Produce accurate and timely monthly finance reports, meeting deadlines.
- Monitor budget performance, analyze variances, propose remedial action.
- Produce accurate financial forecasts highlighting opportunities and risks.
- Assist/complete financial returns and questionnaires as required.
Productivity & Efficiency
- Assist the Directorate with planning and reporting of the Cost Improvement Programme.
- Develop cost awareness, identify and quantify key cost drivers.
Engagement
- Promote a modern and collaborative approach to engaging clinicians in financial management.
- Work positively with other Finance team members to deliver standardisation.
Other
- Act as a representative for the Finance Directorate, upholding professional reputation.
- Ad‑hoc duties as required to assist Finance Business Partners or Deputy Director of Finance.
Personal Specification
Essential Requirements
- CCAB finalist or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 3 years experience providing management accounts support in a large organization.
- Under‑standing of the key operational and financial challenges facing the NHS.
- Strong analysis, comparison and interpretation of complex financial and performance data.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and data analysis.
- Excellent written and verbal communication with the ability to influence senior management.
- Excellent presentation and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and make complex decisions independently.
Desirable Requirements
- CCAB qualified.
- Experience of investigation and analysis of financial issues, with detailed report writing.
- 3 years management accountant experience in an NHS setting.
- Experience of large financial data analysis and interpretation.
Qualifications
- CCAB finalist or equivalent experience.
- CCAB qualified.
Skills
- In‑depth working knowledge and experience of reporting software, budgeting systems, financial ledger systems.
- Ability to assess workload and manage resources to meet overlapping targets.
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
