About Birmingham City University

At Birmingham City University, we are a diverse and inclusive learning community of over 31,400 students from more than 120 countries. We aim to become an exemplar anchor institution, creating and sharing knowledge for a better and more inclusive society. We are committed to providing a transformational educational experience, supporting world-class research, and fostering a collaborative and supportive working environment for our staff.

Recognised as one of the UK’s Top 250 employers (Financial Times & Statista), we pride ourselves on being a place where colleagues feel valued, supported, and able to grow their careers while contributing to the success of our students and communities.

Our student demographic reflects the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of Birmingham itself, with a significant proportion of students from minoritised ethnic backgrounds and the majority of our home students coming from the West Midlands. This diversity is a strength, and it calls for a workforce that is equipped to challenge deficit narratives and thinking - those assumptions that position students from underrepresented groups as lacking rather than recognising their assets, strengths and potential.

By embracing this perspective, we aim to create an environment where all students and colleagues can thrive, and where our work contributes positively to the social, cultural and economic life of Birmingham and beyond.

About the School

The Birmingham School of Architecture, Building, Computing and Engineering is an ambitious and evolving academic community bringing together disciplines that shape the environments, technologies and infrastructures in which people live and work.

Within the School, our Department of Architecture and Built Environment is a thriving learning community committed to high-quality teaching, research and industrial engagement. Following sustained growth in student numbers and research activity, the Department is embarking on a significant programme of expansion and long-term investment.

We believe the built environment is never neutral. The infrastructure we design, construct and maintain shapes how people live, move and connect, influencing resilience, sustainability, opportunity and wellbeing. We therefore see civil engineering not simply as a technical discipline, but as a profession with social, environmental and ethical responsibilities.

Role Summary

We are seeking a Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering to contribute to the development and delivery of our Civil Engineering provision, including Degree Apprenticeships.

You will join a forward-looking academic community committed to teaching excellence, research-informed education, professional practice and student success. You will help prepare engineers who combine technical expertise with professional judgement and an understanding of the wider impact of their decisions.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Geotechnical and Hydraulic Engineering

We will consider candidates from industry, research and higher education backgrounds. We are particularly interested in those who can bring professional expertise, research excellence or strong industry connections into an engaging and contemporary curriculum.

This is an opportunity to play a significant role in shaping the future of Civil Engineering at Birmingham City University at an exciting time of growth and investment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide academic leadership and contribute to the development and enhancement of Civil Engineering programmes, including Degree Apprenticeships.
  • Deliver engaging, inclusive and research-informed teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate provision.
  • Teach core Civil Engineering subjects within your area of expertise, connecting theory with professional practice and real-world challenges.
  • Design effective learning, teaching and assessment approaches and provide constructive feedback and support to students.
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects and contribute to curriculum development and quality enhancement.
  • Develop relationships with industry and professional bodies, creating opportunities for live projects, guest lectures and industry-engaged learning.
  • Undertake high-quality research and scholarly activity, contributing to publications, research funding, knowledge exchange and external partnerships.
  • Contribute to student recruitment, outreach and the wider academic development of the Department.
  • Support an inclusive culture that promotes equality, diversity, belonging and student success.
  • Contribute to programme administration, quality assurance and the wider work of the School.

You will be an experienced Civil Engineer, educator, researcher or industry practitioner with a high level of technical expertise and a commitment to developing the next generation of engineers. You will have:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a relevant professional engineering body, such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
  • A PhD in a Civil Engineering-related discipline or equivalent professional/industrial experience.
  • High-level knowledge, skill and expertise in Civil Engineering.
