Job description

College of Health Wellbeing&Life Science

Grade 8 - £46,049 to £58,225 per annum (due to experience)

Sheffield Hallam University is seeking an experienced Biomedical Scientist to join us as Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science, bringing specialist expertise in Blood Sciences and current or recent professional practice.

Biomedical Science is a major and growing area within our School of Biosciences and Chemistry. Our professionally focused courses prepare students for careers across biomedical and healthcare science, combining scientific knowledge with applied learning and experience of contemporary professional practice. The role will contribute particularly to Blood Sciences, including areas such as haematology, transfusion science and related disciplines.

This is an opportunity to bring your clinical and professional expertise into higher education and help develop the next generation of Biomedical Scientists and Healthcare Scientists. You will teach across undergraduate, apprenticeship and postgraduate provision, translating professional experience into engaging and relevant learning. You will also lead modules, contribute to curriculum development and help maintain the quality and professional relevance of our IBMS-accredited Biomedical Science provision.

Working at Senior Lecturer level, you will provide academic and professional leadership within the subject area. You will contribute to professional practice education and work-based learning, including apprenticeship provision and End Point Assessment, while building strong relationships with NHS employers, professional bodies and healthcare science networks. You will also have opportunities to contribute to scholarship, research, innovation, knowledge exchange and the development of new educational provision.

We are particularly interested in applicants with current or recent experience of NHS pathology services, together with HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist. You will have well-developed expertise in Blood Sciences and substantial experience of teaching, training, supervision or developing others through professional practice. You do not need to have followed a traditional academic career route. We welcome experienced practitioners who can bring professional credibility, clinical insight and enthusiasm for developing others into an academic environment.

You will be collaborative, adaptable and confident working across academic, clinical and professional settings. You will communicate complex scientific ideas clearly, support diverse learners and be ready to contribute to the continued development of our curricula as Biomedical Science, healthcare practice and educational technologies evolve.

A move into academia also offers the opportunity to combine professional practice with a more sustainable working pattern. Sheffield Hallam offers a generous annual leave allowance alongside bank holidays and additional University closure days, as well as flexible and hybrid working arrangements around teaching and business needs.

If you are an experienced Biomedical Scientist who enjoys developing others and would like to use your professional expertise to shape future healthcare scientists, we would welcome your application.

The University currently enrols eligible academic staff into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), a defined-benefit pension scheme.

Like many universities, we are facing well‑documented financial challenges and are entering a period of negotiation with our recognised Trade Unions, including consideration of pension affordability for modern universities. We remain committed to providing our staff with a competitive reward and benefit offer.

Sheffield Hallam welcomes applications from all candidates irrespective of age, pregnancy and maternity, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, race, religion or belief, or marital or civil partnership status.

For this job we particularly welcome applications from ethnic minority applicants who are underrepresented in this area/this type of job at Sheffield Hallam.

The University may be able to sponsor the employment of international applicants in this role; this will depend on a number of factors specific to the individual applicant. You are advised to assess your eligibility against the criteria set out in the UKVI Guidance before applying.

We welcome applications for job-share, part-time and flexible working arrangements.
