Job summary

A global nutrition company in the United Kingdom is seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician to lead a high-performance laboratory team. Job description

Senior Laboratory Technician

Create and lead a high‑performance laboratory team, ensuring the highest quality standards and ISO 17025:2017 accreditation. Plan and coordinate activities, oversee microbiological and chemical analysis, and drive continuous improvement of processes.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate day‑to‑day laboratory operations, ensuring resources and materials are available to meet turnaround times and performance targets.
  • Provide training and enforce health & safety rules and work procedures for all laboratory staff.
  • Document and complete all planned activities on time, including environmental monitoring, proficiency testing, and cleaning.
  • Manage equipment service, maintenance, and calibration, updating documentation as required.
  • Write, review, and approve laboratory documents and procedures.
  • Lead investigations of non‑conforming work and out‑of‑specification test results.
  • Process and trend laboratory data, presenting findings at review meetings and to senior management.
  • Perform registration and analysis of test samples, including preparation and quality control of culture media.
  • Maintain high laboratory standards and cleanliness, contributing to the laboratory’s overall success.
  • Escalate critical issues to management as necessary.
  • Participate in laboratory projects as required by the business.
Profile
Education and Experience
  • GCSE (or equivalent) in English, Maths, and Science.
  • Microbiology or related science degree, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years of laboratory experience, including leading and motivating a team of technicians.
Skills and Abilities
  • Organisation & Planning – schedule laboratory activities to meet performance and quality targets.
  • Communication – represent the laboratory at meetings, present data concisely, and clearly convey plans and schedules to technicians.
  • Computer Skills – proficient user of Microsoft Office, experience with LIMS, data processing & trending, and statistical software is desirable.
  • Microbiological Analysis Skills – aseptic technique, pipetting, serial dilutions, sample plating, plate reading, and preparation of culture media.
