Job summary

inspiring vet care in Newbury is seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician to join the Donnington Grove team on a part-time basis. You will perform a range of diagnostic tests including clinical chemistry, haematology, serology and PCR, supporting veterinary clinicians with accurate results.

Working within a multidisciplinary lab, you will handle sample processing, reporting via LIMS, and ensure quality control and stock management.

Qualifications

  • Experience in clinical biochemistry, haematology, serology and PCR testing.
  • Experience with LIMS and sample handling.
  • Willingness to work part-time and cover occasional bank holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine laboratory testing including PCR, serology, biochemistry and immunoassays.
  • Manage receipt, processing, storage and disposal of samples while maintaining QC.
  • Maintain equipment, reagents and stock levels per SOPs.
  • Identify and escalate technical or maintenance issues to senior staff.
  • Support wider laboratory function through workload prioritisation and client communication.

Practice Highlights
  • Multidisciplinary veterinary laboratory analysing a wide range of animal medical samples using modern diagnostic technologies
  • Exposure to diverse laboratory disciplines including clinical chemistry, haematology, serology, microscopy, cytology, parasitology, microbiology and PCR
  • Hands-on experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), including sample registration and result reporting
  • Involvement in essential laboratory operations including instrument maintenance and calibration, quality control, stock management and waste disposal procedures
How You’ll Make a Difference

As a Senior Laboratory Technician, you will play a key role in delivering accurate and reliable diagnostic results that support veterinary professionals in providing exceptional patient care.

Working within a multidisciplinary laboratory, you will perform a variety of diagnostic tests including clinical chemistry, haematology, serology, microbiology and PCR, while supporting the efficient day-to-day running of the laboratory. From sample processing and result reporting through our LIMS to equipment maintenance, quality control and stock management, your work will help ensure the highest standards of laboratory service and diagnostic excellence.

Working Pattern
  • Part-time 35 hours per week
  • Tuesday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm, with some Bank Holiday cover required during the equine season
  • Saturdays, 8:00am - 12:00pm
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine laboratory testing and investigations, including PCR, serology, biochemistry, immunoassays and result validation
  • Manage the receipt, processing, storage and disposal of samples while maintaining quality control and turnaround times
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, working areas, reagents and stock levels in line with SOPs and laboratory standards
  • Identify, resolve and escalated technical, quality or maintenance issues appropriately to senior staff
  • Support the wider laboratory function through workload prioritisation, client communication, training and other duties as required

  • Previous experience working in a veterinary or medical diagnostic laboratory, with an understanding of diseases relevant to the testing service, would be advantageous
