Job summary

Brookwood Recruitment Ltd is recruiting a Senior Software Engineer for a major UK bank in London. You will own technical design, set engineering standards and mentor peers while remaining hands-on with code.

You will build secure, scalable back-end services with Java/Spring Boot and front-end apps in React/TypeScript, deployed to Azure with AKS, Kafka and modern CI/CD workflows.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of commercial software engineering experience.
• Hands-on with Java and Spring Boot for distributed back-end services.
• Experience with React and TypeScript for modern front-end development.
• Strong design skills for microservices and event-driven architectures (Kafka).
• Cloud engineering with Microsoft Azure, ideally AKS.
• Experience with containers/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Familiarity with API management (Kong).
• Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and deployment tools (Helm).
• Mature practices: automated testing, CI/CD, secure coding and production support.
• Leadership in technical design decisions and mentoring engineers.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical design and development of features and services in collaboration with Solution Architecture.
• Build secure, resilient back-end services and APIs; develop front-ends with React/TypeScript.
• Develop cloud-native applications across Azure and AKS.
• Break legacy capabilities into bounded, event-driven microservices; integrate with core platforms.
• Design event-driven architectures using Kafka and API management (Kong).
• Manage containerised workloads with Kubernetes; automate infra with Terraform and Helm.
• Own services in production, including observability, incident response and RCA.
• Set engineering standards across code reviews, testing, CI/CD, security and IaC.
• Mentor engineers and influence practices beyond the squad.
• Collaborate with product, QA, architecture and delivery teams to translate requirements.

The opportunity

Our client is a well-established UK bank serving personal, business and commercial customers. Following a period of major transformation, it has a clear strategy and a significant engineering agenda: modernising core platforms, decoupling services and building first-class digital journeys. They're hiring a Senior Software Engineer to take technical ownership within a cross-functional squad. You'll lead design, set engineering standards and mentor others - while remaining hands-on with the code. It's a bank big enough that your work will impact millions of customers, but small enough that your technical decisions are visible and make a difference.

What you'll be doing

• Leading the technical design and development of features and services, working closely with Solution Architecture.
• Building secure, resilient back-end services and APIs using Java and Spring Boot, alongside modern front-end applications using React and TypeScript.
• Developing cloud-native applications and distributed services across Microsoft Azure and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
• Breaking legacy capabilities into well-bounded, event-driven microservices and integrating with core banking and payment platforms.
• Designing and implementing event-driven architectures using Kafka and API management technologies such as Kong.
• Managing containerised workloads using Kubernetes, with infrastructure automation through Terraform and Helm.
• Taking ownership of services in production, including observability, incident response and root-cause analysis.
• Setting engineering standards across code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, security and infrastructure as code.
• Mentoring engineers and influencing engineering practices beyond your immediate squad.
• Working with product, QA, architecture and delivery partners to translate business requirements into high-quality software.

What we're looking for

• 8+ years' commercial software engineering experience, with a proven track record operating at senior level.
• Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot, building distributed back-end services and APIs.
• Experience with React and TypeScript and modern front-end development.
• Strong system design capabilities, particularly microservices, event-driven architecture and messaging technologies such as Kafka.
• Hands-on cloud engineering experience with Microsoft Azure, ideally including AKS.
• Experience with containers and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with API management and integration technologies such as Kong.
• Infrastructure as Code experience using Terraform, alongside deployment tooling such as Helm.
• Mature engineering practices covering automated testing, CI/CD, secure coding and production support.
• Experience leading technical design decisions and mentoring other engineers.
• Confident communicator, comfortable engaging with engineers, architects and business stakeholders.
