Job summary

New City College in Havering is seeking a Senior IT Engineer to own and support complex IT infrastructure across networks, servers, end-user devices and Microsoft 365. The role combines hands-on operational work with advanced troubleshooting and project delivery.

You will act as a senior escalation point, mentor junior staff, and lead critical incidents while collaborating with engineers, technicians and external suppliers. 35 hours per week, 52 weeks, permanent contract, with a starting ASAP.

  • Assist with software deployment and device management using SCCM and Jamf.
  • Deliver IT projects and maintain accurate asset records.

Job description

Location: Havering Campuses (Ardleigh Green, Havering Sixth Form, and Rainham).

Pay Range: £46,206 - £47,765 per annum. Placement on the scale will depend on skills, experience, and qualifications.

Hours and weeks: 35 hrs per week, 52 weeks per year.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically skilled IT professional to take ownership of complex technical issues, support critical infrastructure, and help shape the delivery of IT services while mentoring junior colleagues.

The Role:

As a Senior IT Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting and maintaining the College's IT infrastructure, including networks, servers, end-user devices and Microsoft 365 services. You will act as a senior escalation point for technical issues, lead the resolution of complex incidents, and provide guidance and mentoring to Engineers and Technicians. This is a highly hands‑on role combining day‑to‑day operational support with advanced troubleshooting, system administration and project delivery.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Act as the senior technical escalation point for complex IT incidents, ensuring issues are diagnosed, resolved and communicated effectively.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to Engineers and Technicians.
  • Support and administer the College's network infrastructure, including switches, firewalls, Wi‑Fi and connectivity services.
  • Support Microsoft 365, Active Directory, Windows devices, Apple Macs, IP telephony systems and end‑user technologies.
  • Assist with software deployment and device management using tools such as SCCM and Jamf.
  • Maintain accurate IT asset records and configuration information.
  • Deliver technical projects and work collaboratively with colleagues, users and external suppliers to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Provide excellent customer service and ensure support issues are managed through to resolution.
Who You Are:
  • An experienced IT professional with strong hands‑on expertise across infrastructure, networking and end‑user support.
  • Skilled in Windows administration, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Apple Mac support, networking and IP telephony.
  • Confident diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues in a fast‑paced operational environment.
  • A proactive problem solver who takes ownership of incidents and projects through to completion.
  • An effective communicator who can build strong relationships with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • A team player with the ability to mentor others, share knowledge and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Experience with technologies such as VMware, SCCM, Jamf, Veeam, Omnissa Horizon or Linux would be advantageous.
