Job description

About us

At Exchange for Change, we are building something the UK has never had before. Working across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, we are designing and delivering a Deposit Return Scheme from the ground up, creating a system that helps reduce litter and waste by encouraging people to return their empty drinks bottles and cans for recycling.

We are industry led, and driven by purpose. A national movement with a clear mission. No bottle unreturned. No can left behind.

This is not just another job. This is a rare opportunity to do meaningful work, shape a landmark national programme, and help deliver lasting positive impact for people, businesses and the planet alike.

Your role

You will deliver a range of risk-based audits that provide independent assurance over governance, risk management and internal controls. Working collaboratively across the EfC, you will help identify opportunities to improve processes, strengthen controls and support the development and maturity of our overall control environment. You will also contribute to risk assessments, advisory work and continuous improvement within the Internal Audit & Risk function.

You will be part of the Internal Audit & Risk team and work closely with all business functions, programmes and projects and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).

You’ll be based at our Milton Keynes office (30min from Euston) with the option to work from home 2 days per week.

Key Responsibilities & Priorities

Planning & Scoping

  • Conduct risk assessments to inform audit planning.

  • Develop audit scopes aligned to strategic and operational risks.

  • Engage stakeholders to ensure clarity of objectives and expectations.

Audit Delivery

  • Execute audits end-to-end, from fieldwork to reporting.

  • Perform detailed testing, analysis and evaluation of controls.

  • Identify root causes, control gaps and opportunities for improvement.

  • Ensure audit documentation meets professional standards.

Reporting & Communication

  • Produce clear, concise audit reports with pragmatic recommendations that address root causes.

  • Track and challenge management actions to ensure timely remediation.

Risk & Advisory Support

  • Provide advisory input on new processes, systems and change initiatives.

  • Promote strong risk and control awareness across EfC.

Continuous Improvement & Collaboration

  • Contribute to enhancements in audit methodology, tools and templates.

  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes and improve assurance coverage.

What success looks like
  • A strengthened and more mature control environment, with fewer repeat findings and improved risk mitigation.

  • High-quality audit delivery that is timely, insightful and aligned to EfC’s priorities.

  • Enhanced risk culture and improved understanding of controls across EfC.

  • Contribution to the evolution of the Internal Audit & Risk function through innovation and best practice.

About you
  • Professionally qualified: CIA, IIA, CMIIA, or equivalent.

  • Experience in internal audit from practice (Big 4 or mid-tier) is beneficial but not essential.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and challenge constructively.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex information and identify root causes.

  • Proactive, organised and able to manage multiple priorities independently.

The opportunity

Work that makes a difference - and a place where you can too.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help establish a scheme of national importance, working with purpose-driven colleagues and partners to deliver visible, real-world impact. You’ll contribute directly to meaningful environmental and social change and in return, we support and reward our team through a range of benefits and initiatives, including:

  • Competitive base salary

  • Bonus scheme

  • 34 days holiday inclusive of bank holidays, additional holidays for length of service

  • Flexibility with holidays. You may work on a local public holiday and take an alternative day off, giving you the freedom to celebrate the days that matter most to you.

  • 5% employer pension contribution

  • Life Insurance: Cover of 4 times base salary

  • Private Medical Insurance: Includes GP access and an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for wellbeing support

  • Income protection

  • Family Leave: Maternity, adoption, parental, and paternity leave policies will be developed to be progressive and inclusive.

  • Hybrid Working: 60% office or field-based and 40% home-based, with some flexibility according to business and personal needs.
