Job description
Senior Health Care Support Worker (SHCSW)

Working as a Senior Health Care Support Worker (SHCSW) at University Hospital Bristol and Weston is an immensely rewarding job. A job in which your care can make a real difference to patients’ lives. We are looking for enthusiastic, compassionate, and hard‑working individuals that also believe in our Trust Values: Supportive, Respectful, Innovative & Collaborative. Previous experience is not essential, as we offer training.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care whilst maintaining the privacy and dignity of patients.
  • Work alongside a registered nurse to deliver nursing care and support patients with daily living tasks, including washing, toileting, and nutrition.
  • Assist with mobility needs and provide pressure area care.
  • Offer emotional support to patients and their families.
  • Conduct one‑to‑one observations for patients with high clinical risk.
  • Ensure the ward environment is clean and safe, preventing infection and falls.
  • Take and record patients’ vital signs; identify and raise concerns with the registered nurse. In some areas you may need additional skills such as ECGs, venepuncture and simple dressings.
  • Be fully flexible across all shift patterns, including long and weekday shifts, weekends, nights and bank holidays.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Band 3; Level 3 qualification required; previous healthcare experience essential for direct entry, ideally in an acute/hospital setting.
  • Open to those with no prior experience; training will be provided.
Working Hours & Conditions
  • Full time: 37.5 hrs per week (long 12‑hour shifts including days, nights, weekends and bank holidays).
    Part time: 23 hrs per week.
  • Physical demands: prolonged periods on feet, assisting patients with limited mobility.
  • Emotional demands: rapidly changing clinical situations on an acute inpatient ward.
