Job summary

Carmichael UK in Swindon is seeking a seasoned Senior Health & Safety Advisor to lead site safety across multiple construction projects. You will mentor project teams, drive compliance with UK legislation, and promote a proactive safety culture.

Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager, you will undertake audits, RAMS reviews, incident investigations, and KPI reporting, while supporting ISO 45001 compliance and client relations.

Qualifications

• NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health & Safety or NEBOSH General Certificate.
• IOSH membership (Graduate/Technical/Chartered preferred).
• Significant experience in construction and/or civil engineering.
• Strong knowledge of current UK health and safety legislation.
• Experience conducting audits, inspections, and incident investigations.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide H&S guidance to operational teams across multiple sites.
• Conduct regular site inspections, audits and safety tours.
• Ensure compliance with company policies and statutory requirements.

Our client is a well-established construction and civil engineering contractor delivering a diverse portfolio of infrastructure, highways, utilities, earthworks, structures, and build projects across the South West and surrounding regions. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Senior Health & Safety Advisor to join their team based in Swindon.

The Role

Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager, the Senior Health & Safety Advisor will provide expert support, guidance, and leadership to project teams across a range of construction and civil engineering projects. You will play a key role in promoting best practice, ensuring compliance with current legislation, and driving continuous improvement in health, safety, environmental, and wellbeing performance.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide health and safety advice and support to operational teams across multiple construction sites.


• Undertake regular site inspections, audits, and safety tours.


• Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and statutory requirements.


• Support project teams in the preparation and review of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).


• Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.


• Produce detailed audit and inspection reports with clear recommendations.


• Deliver health and safety training, toolbox talks, and briefings.


• Assist with the development and implementation of health and safety initiatives and campaigns.


• Support and guide site management teams in achieving project safety objectives.


• Monitor subcontractor performance and compliance.


• Maintain health and safety records and ensure accurate reporting of KPIs.


• Promote behavioural safety and wellbeing initiatives throughout the business.


• Contribute to ISO 45001 management system compliance and continuous improvement.


• Liaise with clients, regulatory bodies, and external stakeholders on health and safety matters.

Requirements

Essential

• NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety or NEBOSH General Certificate.


• Membership of IOSH (Graduate, Technical, or Chartered status preferred).


• Significant experience within the construction and/or civil engineering sector.


• Strong working knowledge of current UK health and safety legislation.


• Experience conducting audits, inspections, and incident investigations.


• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.


• Full UK Driving Licence.


• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Desirable

• NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification.


• Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH).


• Experience working on infrastructure, highways, utilities, rail, or major civil engineering projects.


• Knowledge of environmental and quality management systems.


• Experience supporting ISO 45001 accredited businesses.
