Job Overview

The integrated Musculoskeletal Service is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and dynamic handtherapist (OT or PT) to join our hand therapy team based at Lister Hospital in Stevenage. A developmental progression from Band 5 to Band 6 will be considered for the right applicant.

The post holder will carry out assessment, intervention, including splinting and rehabilitation, and evaluation of hand therapy patients using a variety of tools and techniques. Trauma referrals are received daily from hand clinics and Consultant teams within our Hand Therapy Unit, and you will be seeing patients with a variety of acute and chronic conditions.

We are looking for sound clinical reasoning and communication skills, and an ability to work well within a team. You will have regular informal/formal supervision with experienced senior therapists and will work as part of the wider community Musculoskeletal Service.

You must hold a full valid driving licence and access to a car for business purposes (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010).

Responsibilities
  • Perform advanced assessment and treatment of hand and plastic patients including splinting and rehabilitation programmes.
  • Assist in the formulation of clinical diagnosis and treatment, and maintain records as an autonomous practitioner.
  • Hold responsibility for own caseload and participate in regular one‑to‑one supervision, informal daily supervision, formal training, clinical reasoning sessions, peer review, case conferences and reflective practice; access advice and support from a senior hand therapist on a regular basis.
  • Undertake evidence‑based audit and research projects to develop and enhance personal and team clinical practice; make suggestions to the Clinical Lead/Head of Service for changes to practice by the team; assist in the implementation of specific changes to practice and contribute to the preparation of service protocols.
  • Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
Benefits & Working Conditions
  • Opportunity to develop from Band 5 to Band 6.
  • Flexible working options where possible; discussions on flexible working patterns welcome to maintain a healthy work‑life balance.
  • Supportive and diverse working environment with commitment to equality and inclusion.
  • Vaccination encouraged as part of NHS policy, but not mandatory.
  • Word versions of documents are available to allow for adaptations to be made (e.g., font, colour, background, conversion to Read Aloud).

We encourage interested applicants to apply early as the vacancy may close before the advertised closing date.

The advert closes on Saturday 20 Dec 2025.
