Job Description

What if you could shape a career as unique as you? At WSP, you can always find opportunities to grow and do what matters to you. Make the most of our global reach to discover new challenges and chances to work with diverse, talented individuals who will help you expand your horizons.

A Little More About Your Role

We are seeking a Senior Grid Connections Engineer to support the continued growth of our Renewables Grid Connections team and the delivery of electricity network connections for renewable energy, battery storage, solar and wind projects across the UK.

Working alongside our Renewables Grid Connections Lead, you will play a key role in the technical delivery of grid connection projects from early-stage feasibility through to energisation. You will support developers, investors and project teams in identifying viable connection opportunities, navigating increasingly complex connection processes, and securing efficient pathways to connect new assets to the electricity system.

This role offers the opportunity to work on some of the UK's most significant renewable energy and energy transition projects while contributing to the evolution of grid connection strategies in a rapidly changing market environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Technical assessment of grid connection designs, compliance requirements, and connection strategies for renewable energy, BESS, solar and wind projects.
  • Manage and coordinate grid connection applications, stakeholder engagement, and technical interfaces with NESO, DNOs, TOs, ICPs, IDNOs, OEMs and contractors.
  • Conduct technical due diligence of connection offers, connection programmes and project development risks.
  • Review and assure electrical designs relating to grid connection infrastructure, including substations and connection assets.
  • Manage and review grid compliance and power system studies, including load flow, fault level, short circuit, reactive power, Dynamic and Transient stability, insulation co-ordination and network impact assessments.
  • Oversee preparation or review of connection applications, Grid Code compliance submissions, G99 applications, Gate 2 applications and Statements of Works.
  • Provide technical assurance of contractor, OEM, ICP and network operator designs to ensure compliance with project and regulatory requirements.
  • Support construction, commissioning, and energisation activities through review of test plans, commissioning procedures and energisation strategies.
  • Identify, assess and manage technical risks associated with grid connection, compliance, programme delivery and design interfaces.
  • Develop and review connection feasibility studies, conceptual designs, single line diagrams, technical reports and client deliverables.
  • Support project delivery through programme management, stakeholder coordination, and issue resolution.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers while maintaining awareness of industry developments, Grid Code changes and connections reform initiatives.
What We’re Looking For…
  • Strong technical understanding of power systems and electricity network connections.
  • Ability to interpret complex network and connection information to support project decision making.
  • Commercial awareness and appreciation of project development drivers.
  • Confidence working directly with clients and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams and deliver high-quality outputs to programme.
  • Collaborative working style within multidisciplinary engineering, environmental and commercial teams.
  • Commitment to safety, quality and engineering excellence.
  • Passion for supporting the UK’s energy transition and net zero ambitions.
  • A proactive attitude with the desire to help grow and shape an expanding grid connections capability.
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience in power systems, electricity networks or grid connections.
  • Experience delivering grid connection projects within the UK electricity market.
  • Strong understanding of UK transmission and distribution networks from 11kV through to 400kV.
  • Knowledge of NESO, National Grid, DNO and transmission connection processes.
  • Experience with G99, Grid Code requirements and connection compliance activities.
  • Familiarity with power system modelling software such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, IPSA, ETAP or PSS/E.
  • Experience supporting renewable energy, BESS, onshore wind, offshore wind or energy infrastructure projects.
  • Strong technical report writing and presentation skills.
