Job summary

BG&E Part of SYSTRA is seeking an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to lead delivery across infrastructure projects including rail, highways, energy and water sectors.

You will manage Engineers/Designers and apprentices, with responsibilities for technical offers and work package sign‑offs, while ensuring safety and quality throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications

• Degree level in geotechnical or a related field.
• Chartered status preferred (ICE) or CGeol.
• Experience with geotechnical software and ground modelling.
• Ability to lead design and check work packages.
• Strong communication across stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead and contribute to design and integration on projects, delivering quality on time and to budget.
• Manage the checking and approval process and sign off on certificates.
• Ensure project requirements are communicated to the team.
• Act as Work Package Manager on small to medium projects.

Job description

We are looking for an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to take a leading role in the delivery of geotechnical engineering projects and permanent and temporary work packages.

To lead on engineering tasks and manage Engineers / Designers, Graduates and Apprentices within discipline in the efficient and effective delivery of client projects ensuring the needs of the Client and the business are met.

You will be working on schemes in various infrastructure sectors (rail, highways, energy, water etc.), with the potential to be involved also in complex residential schemes.

In this role you will work predominantly on the delivery of a portfolio of projects. You will also have responsibilities for the preparation of commercial and technical offers.

Main tasks and responsibilities

• To lead and contribute to design and integration on projects, ensuring Client commitments are met, delivering against quality, time, and budget.
• Manage the checking and approval process to ensure compliance with both Client, project, and processes. This includes the preparation and checking of engineering designs and calculations, taking responsibility for the management of design production.
• Ensure project requirements are effectively communicated to the team.
• Be expected to function as the Work Package Manager on small to medium sized projects with responsibility to sign off Design or Check certificates.
• Working knowledge with all technical standards relevant to your discipline
• Assist where required in work winning and marketing to maximise team and company opportunities.
• Apply procedures and systems to ensure the safety of staff and others affected by the operations throughout design lifecycle.
• Compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental legislation relevant to your discipline.
• Contribute to company-wide goals and business improvement.
• Any other duties as required.

Skills / Knowledge / Experience / Qualifications

• Technical Skills and ability to work independently on work packages or with minimum supervision.
• Demonstrable skills of effective communication across multiple levels and stakeholders to present and discuss proposals, justifications, and conclusions.
• Proficient working on multi-discipline projects
• Experience of project planning, delivery, budgets, and timescales
• Degree level or equivalent relevant to own discipline
• Experienced with proprietary geotechnical software for ground models and design analysis such as (but not limited to) Openground, QGIS, Leapfrog, Slope, Wallap, Repute, Piglet, Plaxis 2D/3D and PDISP.
• Degree educated in a Ground Engineering related subject (BEng/BSc in geotechnical/civil/engineering geology, preferably with an MSc/MEng or similar).
• Professionally qualified, with Chartered Engineer (ICE) or Chartered Geologist (CGeol) status preferred (near Chartership may be considered).
