Job summary

Citi is hiring a Senior Java Engineer to join the FX Technology team in London. You will drive the design and implementation of cross-border FX payments and custody solutions using modern cloud-native technologies and CI/CD pipelines.

You will collaborate with sales, trading, quants and product to translate requirements into scalable, data-driven software. You will mentor junior colleagues and contribute to best practices across the department.

Qualifications

• Master's degree or above in a STEM discipline.
• Proven software engineering experience with strong understanding of computer systems.
• Hands-on Java and Spring development, with ultra-low-latency practices.
• FX domain experience is highly preferred.
• Familiarity with AI coding tools (e.g., Devin, Claude code, Codex) and production-grade apps.
• Proven track record of building or modernizing systems; prevents legacy sprawl.
• Strong SQL/database skills and messaging tech (Kafka, Solace, MQ).
• Experience with caching technologies and distributed systems.

Responsibilities

• Shape and lead a team of technologists to deliver next-level FX solutions.
• Hands-on implementation of cross-border FX payments and custody features using modern cloud-native tech and CI/CD.
• Design and develop system architecture; work with end users and document procedures for filings.
• Collaborate with stakeholders across sales, trading, quants and product to translate needs into data-driven solutions.
• Develop, test and refine new features while improving the SDLC and product quality.
• Provide 3rd line production support and mentor junior team members.
• Define and implement best practices and cross-team processes for transparency and consistency.

Role Overview/What will you do

• As a Senior Java Engineer, your mission is to help shape our team of innovators and technologists toward creating next-level solutions that improve the way our business is run.
• Hands on technical implementation of Cross border FX payments and custody solutions using modern, cloud-native technologies and CI/CD workflows, focusing on consolidation, automation, and scalability.
• Drive the design and development of system architecture, work with end-users of the systems, and enhance the quality of deliverables Ensure staff follows Citi documented policy and procedures as well as maintain desktop procedures and supporting documentation for filings on a current basis and in comprehensive manner
• The successful candidate will work with teams across FX Technology implement solutions that benefit the business
• Collaborate with stakeholders across sales , trading , Quants and Product team to understand Payments needs, translate them into impactful data-driven solutions, and deliver these in partnership with technology.
• Design, Development, Testing of new features in the applications.
• Continual improvement of the software development lifecycle and quality of the product.
• 3rd line support of the production system (dedicated 24h support teams handle 1st / 2nd line).
• Mentoring junior members of the team.
• Contribute to defining and implementing best practices and processes for the department and ensure transparency and consistency across teams

Key Skills and Experience required –

• Master's degree or above (or equivalent education) in a STEM discipline.
• Proven experience in software engineering and development, and a strong understanding of computer systems and how they operate.
• Hands on Experience in Java , Spring, Understanding of ultra-low-latency development practices.
• Proven understanding of FX highly preferred
• Well versed with AI coding tools like Devin , Claude code and Codex and delivered production grade applications.
• Proven track record of building new systems, replacing legacy systems and renovating existing systems
• Strong skill set in SQL / Databases
• Strong understanding of Messaging tech like Kafka, Solace , MQ etc.
• Writing production scale applications to use the Caching technologies.
• The candidate will have systems (software, hardware, networks) knowledge required to define solutions and trouble shoot issues
• Exceptional communicator who loves working with people, confident communicating at all levels from an individual team to the entire enterprise
• Highly credible hands on engineer, confident to deep dive into a product and codebase and offer detailed, constructive analysis and feedback
• Awareness of industry trends and leveraging new technologies as appropriate

Any Beneficial / Nice to have skills and experience

• Understanding of Openshift , Kubernetes, KDB knowledge
