Job summary

Hippo is a rapidly growing digital consultancy delivering transformative digital solutions. We seek a Senior Full Stack Kotlin Developer to join our Hippo Herd and lead Kotlin development across client projects.

You will work in a multidisciplinary team, mentoring engineers, owning deployment pipelines, and delivering secure, well‑engineered systems. Travel to client sites is expected as needed.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in Kotlin and JVM.
• Strong Java and full development lifecycle experience.
• Experience with Node.js, TypeScript, Express.js or Nunjucks.
• Proven track record delivering high‑quality, scalable solutions.
• Expertise with Spring Boot and the wider Spring Framework.
• Experience with microservices design and RESTful APIs.
• Cloud experience (AWS/Azure/GCP) and DevOps practices.
• Containerisation with Docker/Kubernetes; IaC with Terraform.
• CI/CD with Jenkins or Azure DevOps; Kafka or messaging knowledge.
• GOV/NHS consultancy experience is a plus; Helm knowledge is good.

As a Senior Full Stack Kotlin Developer, you will play an important role in making Hippo the best Consultancy out there.

You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team combining data, design, product, delivery, analysis and engineering to deliver bespoke digital services that make a positive and meaningful impact on organisations and society.

You will act as a Senior Consultant to deliver Kotlin Development services to our clients.

Senior Full Stack Kotlin Developers are experienced practitioners who lead by example, ensuring technical excellence within squads and mentoring junior members of the engineering community.

Our solutions empower our customers to build and support secure, scalable, and well-engineered systems beyond traditional boundaries that allow our customers to understand and get the most from their data and digital services.

The Senior Full Stack Kotlin Developer will be a key player and implementer in this.

Your Role in a Nutshell

Lead the production of user-centred software, ensuring development follows business requirements and best practice.

Work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders to explore, design, and deliver solutions to complex client problems.

Take ownership of software development and deployment pipelines, resolving issues and potential bottlenecks.

Communicate and present prototypes, solutions, and progress to internal and external stakeholders in a clear, concise manner.

Mentoring and coaching other engineers to support their professional development.

About the Candidate: Essential Experience

Extensive experience in Kotlin and JVM

Strong experience in Java and the full development lifecycle delivering user-centred digital solutions.

Exposure to Node.js, TypeScript, Express.js or Nunjucks.

Proven track record of contributing to the delivery of high-quality, robust, and scalable solutions.

Expertise in building back‑end services using Spring Boot and the wider Spring Framework.

Experience of Microservices design and architecture, including Restful API services.

Strong knowledge of public cloud (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and DevOps practices, including containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes).

Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform.

Proficient in using CI/CD tools such as Jenkins or Azure DevOps.

Previous experience of working on GOV/NHS projects or in a consultancy environment.

Knowledge of Kafka or other asynchronous messaging systems.

Knowledge of Helm.

Hippo Locations

We are headquartered in Leeds and have offices across the UK in Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, London and Bristol.

We're on the lookout for top talent nationwide but you need to be located within reasonable travelling distance from one of our offices.

Given the dynamic nature of a consulting business, you may be required to work on-site at a Hippo office or at an in/out of town client location for a number of days per week (client dependent) and therefore candidates will need to be open/flexible to travel and working on one of those sites at least 2 days per week.
