Job summary

Smart Component Technologies Ltd is seeking an experienced embedded firmware engineer in Cambridge to develop and maintain firmware for IoT devices using C/C++ and Python. You will work closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless firmware–hardware integration and scalable protocols.

The role requires 5+ years in embedded firmware, MQTT/LoRaWAN experience, and familiarity with AWS IoT Core. Cambridge on-site work, with a strong emphasis on testing, debugging, and code quality.

Qualifications

• Proficiency in C/C++ and Python.
• Experience with STM32 microcontrollers and ARM Cortex-M.
• Familiarity with IoT protocols MQTT and LoRaWAN.

• Excellent debugging skills for hardware and firmware.
• Experience with Git and static code analysis tools.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
• Experience with firmware test approaches (unit/integration/on-hardware).
• Experience decoding binary payloads.

Salary: £50,000 - 55,000 per year

Requirements

• Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
• Typically 5+ years of experience in production-quality embedded firmware development
• Strong proficiency in C/C++ and Python programming
• Strong experience with STM32 microcontrollers and the surrounding toolchain, or a comparable ARM Cortex-M family
• Strong familiarity with IoT protocols such as MQTT and LoRaWAN
• Experience with cloud integration, preferably with AWS IoT Core
• Excellent debugging skills for hardware and firmware issues
• Familiarity with version control systems such as Git and static code analysis tools
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
• Experience defining and implementing firmware test approaches, including automated and on-hardware testing
• Experience with binary protocol design and decoding of packed sensor payloads
• Ability to reliably commute to Cambridge CB4 0WG or relocate before starting work
• Work authorisation in the United Kingdom

• Interrogate device data to validate firmware behaviour, diagnose field issues, and support colleagues with wider data analysis
