Senior Fellow in GICU

This is a 12 fixed term contract with the position commencing as soon as possible.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to appoint a suitably experienced physician (ST3 level and above) to support ICU services at General Intensive Care Unit, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. The applicant must have previous experience in critical care medicine or anaesthetics and be competent in airway skills.

You will be expected to work closely with their colleagues, the ICM or Anaesthetic Specialist Registrars and ACCPs to provide registrar level cover across the unit.

Responsibilities

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:

  • To support the provision of a first-class clinical service and provide effective middle-grade leadership (ST3 level or above) to the staff working on the unit.
  • To support the clinical decision making of medical and nursing staff on the unit.
  • To lead, in conjunction with the Consultant workforce, the education programme for junior doctors.
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies.
  • To conduct clinical practice by contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Division's service plans.
  • The post could be delivered on a whole or part-time basis. Any candidate who is unable, for medical reasons, to work full time will still be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis. Job share applicants are also welcome.

Job responsibilities

WHAT YOULL DOStandard elements of ICM training The successful candidate will join the middle grade rota for other Drs in training and have access to competency certification in the full range of General ICM clinical activities. This would be suitable for those training in ICM, in Anaesthetics or in similar specialities.

Once established, (after at least 6 months), and depending on the wishes of the candidate, there is opportunity to transfer to other clinical areas, (Cardiac ICM, Neuro ICM, Paediatric ICM and General Medicine) as required for single speciality training equivalence. For the right candidate, this could lead to the opportunity to develop a GMC-approved CESR pathway for Specialist Registration in single speciality ICM.

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists). Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5; Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS) A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)

Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.
