As part of our Private Sector Housing Team, you’ll make a meaningful contribution to improving residents’ lives by ensuring safe, decent, and well-managed homes across the borough. We’re looking for an experienced and motivated Senior Environmental Health Officer to join our Private Sector Housing Team. This is an excellent opportunity to lead on improving housing standards, tackling poor conditions, and protecting the health and safety of residents in the borough.
You’ll supervise and develop a small team, oversee complex enforcement activity, and play a key role in shaping Croydon’s approach to regulating and improving private rented homes.
Key responsibilities
- Supervising and developing a team of up to 6 officers and assistants
- Leading inspections of private rented properties, identifying hazards, and ensuring landlords comply with their legal duties
- Taking enforcement action, including prosecutions and financial penalties, against non-compliant landlords and agents
- Overseeing discretionary licensing of HMOs and private rented homes
- Acting as the lead officer in a specialist area such as fire safety, pest control, tall buildings, or energy efficiency
- Contributing to policy, projects, and service development
We’re looking for someone with
- A recognised Environmental Health qualification (REnvH or equivalent) and experience in housing or public health enforcement
- Membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health or equivalent, or willingness to achieve it
- Strong knowledge of housing, public health, and enforcement legislation
- Experience of supervising staff, motivating teams, and managing performance
- Confidence in handling complex enforcement cases, preparing legal files, and representing the Council in court or tribunals
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills
