Job description
Overview

At Thames Water, we make a daily difference to over 16 million customers, delivering 2.6 billion litres of water through 32,000 km of pipes — keeping taps flowing and toilets flushing across London and the Thames Valley. We’re looking for a Senior Energy Commercial Analyst to join our Energy & Carbon team within the Commercial Energy Buying & Contracts function. This is a pivotal and high-impact role that helps shape Thames Water’s energy risk management and hedging strategy, supporting the procurement and management of energy. You’ll provide expert market insight, support our net zero ambitions, and guide senior stakeholders with robust analysis and forecasting.

Base location: Hybrid – Clearwater Court, Reading

Working hours: 36 hours, Monday to Friday

Responsibilities
  • Enact Thames Water’s power and gas hedging strategy – making informed, data-driven decisions based on market fundamentals.
  • Deliver price forecasting to support budgeting and long-term business planning, maintaining complex Excel and Power BI models.
  • Provide regular energy market analysis and updates to executive stakeholders, translating complex data into clear business insight.
  • Manage Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) – overseeing invoicing, price validation, forecasting, and month-end processes.
  • Collaborate across the business, including Finance, Energy Suppliers, and internal Energy & Carbon teams, to support energy procurement and pricing processes.
  • Support broader energy and carbon initiatives, including portfolio development and net zero business cases.
What you should bring to the role

Essential:

  • Numerical-based qualification or equivalent showing you have a good handle on numeracy.
  • Extensive experience in the energy industry, ideally within a commercial, trading, or analytical function.
  • Highly numerate with advanced Excel and Power BI.
  • Strong analytical mindset, capable of handling large datasets and complex models.
  • Excellent communication skills with the confidence to advise senior stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and make clear, informed decisions.
  • Self-starter with strong initiative and problem-solving skills.

Desirable:

  • Power trading or energy market analysis.
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg or other energy market platforms.
  • Knowledge of Python or similar analytical programming tools.
What’s in it for you?
  • Competitive salary from £51,000 to £60,000 per annum, depending on experience.
  • Annual Leave: 26 days holiday per year increasing to 30 with the length of service (plus bank holidays).
  • Performance-related pay plan directly linked to both company and individual performance measures and targets.
  • Generous Pension Scheme through AON.
  • Access to benefits to support health, wellbeing, and finances, including annual health MOTs, physiotherapy, counselling, Cycle to Work, shopping vouchers, and life assurance.
