Job summary

Nu Quantum Ltd. in Cambridge, UK is seeking an experienced Senior Electronics Engineer to design high-performance analogue and mixed-signal electronics for quantum networking hardware.

You will collaborate with mechanical, software, FPGA, optics, and physics teams to take concepts from lab prototypes to deployed systems. You will architect novel electronics, build and test prototypes in the lab, and help plan timelines and budgets.

Qualifications

  • Degree-level qualification in electronics, physics or other closely-related subject.
  • Industry experience in analogue electronic design.
  • Experience with PCB design tools, including design for manufacture and reliability.
  • Understanding of high-frequency and RF circuit design fundamentals.
  • Ability to perform hands-on testing and experimentation using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers and similar equipment.
  • Knowledge of sound engineering design processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate and be a great team player, working with multidisciplinary teams to meet demanding specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Liaise with team across technical and business disciplines to agree requirements and specifications for electronics systems.
  • Carry out design calculations and simulations, and select suitable components and equipment.
  • Produce high-quality electronic schematics, system designs and PCB layouts.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Senior Electronics Engineer, skilled in high-performance analogue and mixed-signal circuitry to join our highly collaborative team, supporting the development of our novel quantum networking hardware. The successful candidate will be working with teams spanning mechanical engineering, software and FPGA, optics, nanofabrication, and physics. There will be opportunities to work with cutting-edge technologies and to try out highly creative and innovative designs, working from initial concepts through to lab-based testing and deployment of prototype systems.

As a member of our growing electronics team, you’ll be responsible for architecting novel electronics designs while liaising with the physics and product teams to agree on ambitious yet achievable specifications. You’ll be designing, building and testing prototypes in the lab, and supporting their use within the wider company to enable fast and scalable quantum networking. You’ll be collaborating with Engineers and Scientists from a wide range of disciplines to make sure complex electronic systems function as expected, and supporting the project management team in planning timescales and budgets.

Your skills, qualifications and experience

Essential

  • Degree-level qualification in electronics, physics or other closely-related subject
  • Industry experience in analogue electronic design
  • Experience with PCB design tools, including design for manufacture and reliability
  • Understanding of high-frequency and RF circuit design fundamentals
  • Ability to perform hands-on testing and experimentation using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers and similar equipment.

  • Proven ability to collaborate and be a great team player, working with multidisciplinary teams to meet demanding specifications

Desirable

  • Experience with line management and/or team leadership
  • Experience with electronic and/or electromagnetic simulation tools
  • Ability to solder and rework high-density PCBs
  • Experience integrating multiple sub-assemblies to form complete electronic systems
  • Experience with some or all of the following software packages: Altium Designer, LTSpice, Keysight ADS
  • Understanding of noise in electronic circuits
  • Experience with FPGAs
