Job summary

Octagon Group in High Wycombe is recruiting a Senior Electronics Design Engineer to shape next-gen material-characterisation laboratory instruments. You’ll lead analogue front-end, high-speed digital and FPGA/SoC designs, own electronics architecture and BOM, and drive the product from concept through verification to production.

You’ll collaborate with optics, mechanical, firmware, software and science teams, bringing up boards on the bench and ensuring compliance with IEC 61326-1 and IEC

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related discipline.
• 5+ years designing electronics for instrumentation or test & measurement products.
• Experience with MCU-based control boards and interfaces: Ethernet, USB, SPI, I2C, UART/RS-232, RS-485, CAN, PCIe.
• Xilinx Zynq FPGA/SoC design in VHDL/Verilog.
• Hands-on bring-up and debug with oscillosopes, spectrum and logic analysers.
• EMC and product safety for lab equipment: IEC 61326-1 and IEC 61010-1.
• Structured design approach: cabling, harnessing and overall system integration.

Responsibilities

• Design and verify low-noise analogue front-ends, mixed-signal, power and control boards.
• Own high-speed digital and FPGA/SoC design on Xilinx Zynq.
• Design PCBs in Altium 365 to IPC standards.
• Own electronics architecture from concept to product release.
• Lead design reviews, DFMEA and verification plans.
• Prototype quickly and perform bench bring-up with firmware team.
• Manage electrical BOM and safety/compliance considerations.
• Support released products with obsolescence, manufacturing, and field issues.

Want to shape the electronics behind the next generation of scientific instruments, from concept to product release?

We’re recruiting a Senior Electronics Design Engineer for an established global scientific instruments business in High Wycombe. You’ll join a small, hands-on electronics team (two engineers plus placement students) building new material-characterisation laboratory instruments and supporting the current range. You’ll have a lot of say over the next generation of instruments.

What you’ll do

• Design and verify low-noise analogue front-ends, mixed-signal, power and control boards
• Own high-speed digital and FPGA/SoC design on Xilinx Zynq
• Design PCBs in Altium 365 to IPC standards
• Own the electronics architecture for your subsystems, from concept through prototype and verification to product release
• Run the design process: HRS/PRS, design reviews, DFMEA, verification plans and reports
• Prototype quickly, then bring up, debug and validate boards on the bench with the firmware team
• Own the electrical BOM and the safety/EMC considerations, and support DFM/DFA through to production
• Support released products: obsolescence, manufacturing and field issues, root-cause analysis
• Work with optics, mechanical, firmware, software and science colleagues

What you’ll bring

• MCU-based control boards and interfaces: 1G/10G Ethernet, USB, SPI, I²C, UART/RS-232, RS-485, CAN, PCIe
• Xilinx Zynq FPGA/SoC design in VHDL or Verilog
• Hands-on bring-up and debug with oscilloscopes, spectrum and logic analysers
• EMC and product safety for lab equipment: IEC 61326-1 and IEC 61010-1, taken through compliance testing
• A structured approach to product design and a system-level view: cabling, harnessing and how each board fits the whole instrument
