Up to £69 per hour umbrella (Inside IR35)

12 month contract (initially) - Hybrid working (minimum 3 days per week onsite)

Overview of Department:

The Electrical Systems Group within the Facilities Engineering Department are responsible for providing both technical support and design consultancy on electrical systems and equipment for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities within Devonport Royal Dockyard, and Ministry of Defence (MOD) establishments.

As part of this function, they are responsible for providing intelligent customer support to Ministry of Defence (MOD) projects within Devonport Royal Dockyard.

The role is predominantly office based but will require site visits across the Devonport site.

Job Role and Responsibilities:

The primary purpose of the senior electrical design engineer (power) role is to support the Intelligent Customer function for electrical aspects of design projects delivered by subcontractors, on behalf of the MOD. This role ensures that outsourced designs meet technical, regulatory, and business requirements while maintaining the highest standards of quality and compliance. The successful candidate will play a supporting role as the technical authority, bridging the gap between the company's engineering requirements and subcontractor performance.

  • Prescribe electrical requirements for design projects.
  • Specify electrical aspects in Scope of Work Documentation.
  • Support tender reviews from a technical perspective.
  • Provide technical oversight of electrical designs through frequent reviews and progress meetings.
  • Respond to subcontractor Technical Queries.
  • Support Design Reviews to ensure that subcontractor electrical designs align with company requirements, industry standards, and regulatory compliance.
  • Design Validation. Conduct independent assessments, technical audits, and feasibility reviews to verify design integrity and functionality.
  • Technical Advisory. Provide guidance and expert advice to internal stakeholders regarding subcontractor work, highlighting potential areas for improvement.
  • Recommend and implement strategies to optimize subcontractor engagement, ensuring efficiency and cost-effectiveness without compromising quality.
Key Skills and Attributes:
  • Noteworthy experience of designing HV / LV electrical distribution systems
  • Sound understanding of regulations, legislation and standards that are applicable to electrical engineering and power systems
  • Experience of writing requirements and scope of work documents
  • Sound understanding of the IET Wiring Regulations BS7671
  • Ability to understand and review electrical engineering drawings and calculations.
  • Good organisational and time management skills;
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written, including report writing;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Logical approach to problem solving and provision of advice;
  • An ability to work with others and independently;
  • Able to deliver to time, cost and quality.
