Powersystems is an employee‑owned high‑voltage electrical engineering company specialising in electrical power infrastructure, grid connections and renewable energy. With a successful track record and a pipeline of work into 2027 and beyond, we are expanding our in‑house design team to support the delivery of safe, efficient and compliant electrical infrastructure for both new and expanding energy developments.

Position

Senior Electrical Design Engineer – Full time, Permanent

Salary: £55,000 – £75,000 per annum (dependent on skills and experience)

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design of HV substations and electrical infrastructure (11 kV to 132 kV) – substation layouts, primary equipment layouts, bus‑bar designs and specifications.
  • Protection & control design – preparation of protection SLDs, scheme specifications, schematics, coordination reports, relay configuration files.
  • HV cable design – design, verification and ampacity rating calculations using standard manufacturers’ data and finite analysis software (Cymcap).
  • Systems studies – perform preliminary design studies using Digsilent Powerfactory (Load Flow, Fault Level, Protection Coordination, Harmonics, P28), manage and review studies from external consultants.
  • Earthing design – carry out designs in Excel and CDEG, review external earthing designs.
  • Create detailed design packages: cable schedules, schematics, block wiring diagrams, ADMD calculations, battery charger sizing.
  • Prepare general arrangement drawings and support CAD and panel assembly teams.
  • Ensure designs prioritize safety and comply with CDM and Health & Safety regulations.
  • Conduct site visits for surveys, inspections and factory acceptance tests.
  • Engage directly with clients, consultants, DNO/TNO representatives to deliver projects on time and to specification.
  • Maintain a professional image, contribute to Powersystems’ success and continually improve services and efficiency.

Required Qualifications
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Previous experience in electrical design, preferably within electrical contracting or utilities.
  • Strong technical knowledge of power engineering.
  • Ability to manage multiple design projects and meet conflicting deadlines.
  • High level of communication; able to justify design decisions to clients and colleagues.
  • Capable of producing high‑quality technical reports.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Power Systems is advantageous.
  • Strong organisational, time‑management and IT (MS Office) skills; excellent spoken and written English.
  • Clear communication of technical and commercial information, effective negotiation and teamwork.
  • Adaptable, resilient, proactive, willing to travel across the UK with occasional overnight stays, and holds a full UK driving licence.
Desirable Criteria
  • Higher degree / postgraduate qualification or equivalent in power systems.
  • Professional registration with the IET at IENG / CENG level in progress or achieved.
  • Strong report‑writing skills and concise technical communication.
  • Open to change, resilient and proactive.
