Job summary

A design and build contractor is seeking a Senior Electrical Designer to lead the electrical discipline on various healthcare and biotech projects in Rochdale. The successful candidate will manage the design process, work collaboratively with diverse teams, and provide mentorship to junior engineers. This role offers a pathway to higher responsibilities, including Design Lead and Principal Associate positions. Candidates must have experience in electrical design within regulated environments.

Job description

Urban Connect are currently partnered with a specialist design & build contractor to the pharmaceutical, biotech, life sciences and healthcare sectors, to appoint a Senior Electrical Designer into their growing in‑house M&E team in Rochdale.

With a record pipeline and live projects ranging from £5m to £100m, including major schemes for blue‑chip clients such as AstraZeneca and GSK, they on track to grow turnover to 150%.

Working predominantly on complex cleanrooms, laboratories, sterile manufacturing and high‑spec healthcare environments, you will fully lead the electrical discipline on your projects with the support of Junior Engineers.

As Senior Electrical Designer / Design Lead, you will be responsible for :

• Leading the electrical scope on design & build projects from concept through detailed design, installation support and commissioning.
• Producing and checking detailed designs, calculations and specifications for HV / LV distribution, switchboards, sub‑mains, power and lighting, emergency lighting, fire alarms, security / CCTV / access control, data / Wi‑Fi and control systems.
• Working closely with in‑house architectural, mechanical / HVAC and Revit teams to develop coordinated layouts, space planning, cable routing and builderswork requirements.
• Attending client and design team meetings, leading technical discussions, and translating user requirements into robust, compliant solutions in pharma, life science and healthcare environments.
• Providing technical guidance and day‑to‑day support to junior electrical engineers and technicians, helping to develop the wider electrical capability in‑house.

This is a staff position with clear progression to Design Lead and ultimately Principal / Associate, where you will own commercial performance as well as multidisciplinary design delivery.
