Job summary

An ecological consultancy is seeking a Senior Ecologist with specialism in Ornithology to lead diverse projects in the UK. The ideal candidate will possess top academic qualifications in ecology or biological sciences and is expected to be a proactive member of the CIEEM working towards Chartership. Responsibilities include leading ecological surveys, engaging clients, and mentoring junior staff, while delivering exceptional project outcomes. The role supports a 4-day working week with competitive pay.

Job description

Join the Tyler Grange ecology tribe! We are looking for a Senior to help us with a specialism in birds, here you'll lead exciting projects, overseeing everything from:

Preliminary Ecology Appraisals

Ecological Impact Assessments

Habitats Regulations Assessments

Mitigation Strategies

You should be adept at scoping, designing and leading ecological surveys. Be comfortable to forge strong bonds with our clients to win work for the team and yourself, to build a standout client and site portfolio. We’re also looking for a leader to mentor our budding consultants and graduates.

Expect diverse tasks. Dive into meaty projects, collaborate cross-discipline, and adjust on the fly to nature's whims as an ecologist. While the pace is lively, there are moments to pause and reflect. No two days are the same.

  • Top academic qualifications in ecology or biological sciences
  • To be a CIEEM member working towards Chartership
  • To have a specialism in Ornithology, with a track record of scoping and undertaking breeding and non-breeding bird surveys for large sites
  • Experience in Habitat Regulations Assessments and stakeholder engagement with Natural England, and design of mitigation strategies
  • In-depth understanding of the legislative and planning policy framework
  • Excellent survey skills including extended Phase I/UKHabs, specialised species surveys
  • Experience liaising with clients, statutory bodies, and LPAs
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills, ensuring clarity for both clients and peers
  • Robust and precise report writing and reviewing capabilities
  • Exceptional project management skills: leading, mentoring, and making sure projects are delivered on time and within budget, all while exceeding client expectations
  • A proven track record in business development and securing your own projects
  • An approach that resonates with our values and fosters collaborative working
  • A commitment to the pursuit of excellence
  • A full UK driving licence

Salary £39,390 - £46,590

Location: Manchester, Birmingham or Leeds
