Job summary

Brooks Ecological Ltd. is seeking a Consultant/Senior Level Ecologist to deliver ecological surveys, assessments and mitigation strategies across infrastructure, development and conservation projects.

You will manage projects, mentor junior staff, liaise with clients and planning authorities, and prepare robust reports including PEAs, EcIA and Biodiversity Net Gain assessments. We offer hybrid working, a collaborative culture and ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

  • Ability to complete Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs) on small to medium sites independently and using UK habitat classification.
  • Undertake Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments on small to medium sites independently using the Statutory metric.
  • Provide clear, succinct and robust technical reports including PEAs and protected species surveys.
  • Experience with GIS mapping and data analysis.
  • Understanding of UK environmental policy and legislation.
  • Attention to detail and ability to deliver contracts on time and to budget.
  • Client-focused approach with awareness of commercial aspects of projects.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Consultant/Senior Level Ecologist to work on a broad variety of projects. You will play a key role in delivering ecological surveys, assessments, and mitigation strategies across a range of projects, from infrastructure and development to conservation and biodiversity enhancement. The role includes providing technical expertise, managing projects and client relationships, and mentoring junior staff.

The role will include:

  • Conducting Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), and protected species surveys (e.g., bats, GCN, reptiles, badgers).
  • Preparing high-quality ecological reports, including Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments, and mitigation plans.
  • Supporting project management tasks including client liaison and scheduling.
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, planning policy, and best practice guidance.
  • Liaising with stakeholders including clients, planning authorities, and conservation bodies.

Key Requirements:

  • The ability to complete PEA’s on small to medium size green and brownfield sites independently and is confident in the use of the UK habitat classification system.
  • Able to undertake Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments on small to medium size green and brownfield sites independently using the Statutory metric.
  • Demonstrable ability to provide clear, succinct and robust technical reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, and protected species surveys.
  • Experience with GIS mapping and data analysis.
  • A clear understanding of relevant UK wide environmental /ecological policy and legislation.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to deliver contracts on time and to budget.
  • A client-focused approach where the commercial element of each project can be
  • understood and appreciated.
