Senior Diabetic Eye Screener/Grader

We are recruiting a Screener/Grader to deliver diabetic eye screening within the Herts and West Essex Diabetic Eye Screening Programme. The role requires an experienced and skilled screener/grader to provide a high-quality comprehensive service to patients with diabetes in the East & North Hertfordshire area.

The post holder will work within the East & North Hertfordshire retinal screening team, undertaking occasional weekend working and participation in late clinics. In addition, a High‑Cost Area Supplement of 5% of basic salary is provided, subject to a minimum payment of £1,258 and a maximum payment of £2,121 per annum pro rata.

Main duties of the job
  • Referrer Outcome Grading (ROG) when required and feedback to the team at the regular MDT meetings.
  • Monthly EQA grading test (TaT) and participation in ongoing internal quality assurance of grading standards.
  • Training and mentoring of new screening recruits, providing regular 1:1 feedback.
  • Involvement in the ongoing audit activities of the screening team.
  • Monitoring grading queues to ensure grading is completed and results are notified according to programme standards.
  • Assisting the Team Leader with appraisals of the screening team on a six‑monthly interview.
  • Working autonomously with minimal direction from clinical management.

Qualifications / Training
  • Health Screener Diploma in Diabetic eye screening.
  • Good level of education and further education.
Previous Experience
  • Extensive grading experience at Primary, Secondary, arbitration and Referral outcome grading.
  • Keeping accurate and complete records consistent with legislation, policy and procedures.
  • Significant experience in secondary grading and understanding of NHS Screening procedures.
Skills
  • Experience of undertaking audit and research.
  • Ability to recognise common non‑DR related eye conditions and refer appropriately.
  • Ability in taking responsibility for diagnosis from examining images and communicating to patients and medical personnel in a sensitive but straightforward manner.
  • OCT capture and interpretation.
Knowledge
  • Excellent understanding of diabetic eye screening.

  • Experience and evidence of engagement around equality, diversity and inclusion issues in relation to policy, service development and service delivery.
  • Flexible and able to work using initiative.
  • Ability to remain calm and personable in periods of tension.
  • Ability to easily travel between sites.
