Job description

As a Senior Design Manager, you will be responsible for delivering the design on allocated projects across the Heathrow H7 Framework, delivering the best solutions for our clients whilst identifying and mitigating risks. Design Management is a form of technical project management, delivering the right design in line with programme and budget that also delivers on safety and environmental objectives. The role is based at Heathrow Airport, with a minimum of 3 days on site per week. The role is predominantly site based at Compass Centre, requiring travel to the terminals and (as required) external designers / subcontractor's premises. The Design Manager shall be for competent for the role and willing & able to obtain and maintain the necessary site passes. Detailed knowledge across fit out & mechanical disciplines will be highly beneficial for this specific role.

Key Accountabilities
  • Undertake design management in line with the Framework Design Management Plan.
  • Deliver progressively assured designs on allocated projects, whilst identifying and mitigating risks, with outputs suitable for acceptance by Costain and the client.
  • Reporting progress on activities.
  • Other relevant accountabilities discharged by the Framework Lead Design Manager, supporting selection & appointment of the designer.
  • Dealing with contractual correspondence related to designers.
  • Measuring design progress against the project programme.
  • Engaging with the clients technical, engineering and assurance teams as required.
  • Ensuring progressive assurance of design.
  • Robustly managing design change.
  • Coordinating the reviews and being the ultimate arbitrator of suitability or acceptance.
  • Design management governance.
  • Undertaking risk reviews (technical and SHE/DRA's).
  • Ensure our responsibilities under CDM and Building Regulations are fulfilled.
Requirements
  • Other responsibilities under the Framework Design Management Plan include solid post-graduate design, engineering or management experience in infrastructure or related industry with demonstrable track record of achievement.
  • Demonstrable detailed knowledge in multiple design and construction process models (e.g. plan of work).
  • Practical approach, logical thought process and a methodical way of working.
  • A creative and innovative approach to problem-solving.
  • Extensive experience of setting up and/or operating EDMS and design workflows.
  • Extensive experience of technical management, being able to understand and review design deliverables and demonstrating the ability to collate information and prepare reports.
  • Ability to understand technical concepts and detail across a range of disciplines (e.g. structural, mechanical and electrical engineering); fit out & mechanical disciplines will be highly beneficial for this specific role.
  • Extensive experience of drafting effective contractual correspondence and the facilitation of collaborative solutions.
  • Experience of developing & implementing procurement and contract strategies for design.
  • Negotiating and team-working skills with the ability to motivate and lead a team.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Demonstrable legal, contractual and detailed construction knowledge.
  • Experience in implementing and delivering strategic objectives and dealing with change.
  • Confidence and ability to assert influence.
Desirable
  • Experience in aviation infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with Heathrow Airport Limited (HAL) project processes and procedures.
Qualifications Essential
  • Bachelor's degree / Engineering or management apprenticeship with industry experience.
  • Chartered member of professional institute (MICE/IMechE/MCIOB etc).
Qualifications Desirable
  • Master's / post graduate degree.
  • Other secondary professional qualifications and training (e.g. MAPM, MCIarb, MICW etc).
  • Project Management training / skills.
