Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

The company: A leading bespoke and cutting‑edge engineering business in Northern Ireland is seeking to appoint a Senior Design Engineer to take ownership of complex mechanical and robotic design projects. This is a key permanent position within a company that is recognised for its technical innovation, precision engineering, and forward‑thinking approach to automation and manufacturing.

About the Role: The Senior Design Engineer will lead the delivery of high‑quality design solutions using SolidWorks and AutoCAD, ensuring all products and systems are developed to the highest standards of performance, safety, and reliability. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, the successful candidate will contribute to product development, continuous improvement, and the creation of advanced automated systems for industrial applications.

This role requires a hands‑on technical leader capable of managing projects from initial concept through to production handover, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring best‑in‑class engineering practices across the department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the mechanical design of bespoke equipment and systems from concept to manufacture
  • Deliver detailed 3D models, 2D drawings, and supporting documentation using SolidWorks and AutoCAD
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring on‑time delivery and adherence to quality standards
  • Work collaboratively with production, operations, and maintenance teams to ensure designs are practical and optimised for manufacture
  • Take ownership of design reviews, risk assessments, and compliance checks
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers
  • Engage with suppliers to specify and source components for custom‑built assemblies
  • Maintain accurate design records and documentation for full traceability
  • Contribute to product testing, verification, and continuous improvement initiatives
Essential Criteria
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in a mechanical or manufacturing design role
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD, with proven ability to produce accurate and detailed technical drawings
  • Excellent understanding of mechanical systems, metal fabrication, and production processesDemonstrated ability to manage multiple design projects and meet demanding deadlines
  • HNC/HND or higher in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (degree preferred)
