Job summary

Howden is seeking a Senior Database Platform Engineer to own the reliability, performance, security and evolution of our database platforms. You will manage SQL Server and Azure SQL, and help modernise toward PostgreSQL, cloud-native services and lakehouse architectures.

This is a hands-on role working with Platform, Data and Operations teams to ensure resilient, scalable data services. You will implement monitoring, automation and disaster recovery in a remote-first environment with London

Qualifications

• 5+ years database engineering or DBA experience on production platforms.
• Strong SQL Server administration, performance tuning and troubleshooting.
• Azure SQL and cloud-hosted database services; HA/DR with backup/restore.
• Automation experience with PowerShell or Python.
• Experience with incident, problem and change management processes.

Responsibilities

• Own operational health and performance of SQL Server and Azure SQL platforms.
• Plan upgrades, patching and platform lifecycle activities.
• Diagnose performance issues across infrastructure, workloads and application interactions.
• Design, implement and validate backup, recovery and disaster recovery capabilities.
• Establish monitoring, alerting and observability for database services.
• Contribute to migration toward PostgreSQL and cloud-native services.

While you'll be responsible for keeping our SQL Server and Azure SQL estate healthy, secure and performant, you'll also help modernise our data platforms and support our transition towards PostgreSQL, cloud-native database services and modern lakehouse architectures.This is a hands-on engineering role.
