Job summary

United Utilities is seeking a Senior Data Scientist in Warrington (Hybrid, 3 days on site) to lead advanced analytics and ML initiatives across the organisation. You will design, deploy and continually improve models that influence strategic decisions, while mentoring a small team of Data Scientists.

You will bridge business challenges with innovative data-driven solutions, engaging stakeholders and shaping best practices across the analytics function.

Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of advanced analytic techniques (Statistics, Machine Learning, Deep Learning) and ability to select approaches.
  • Experience collecting, parsing, cleansing and analysing large datasets.
  • Strong curiosity and interdisciplinary thinking across the scientific spectrum.
  • Experience with DataBricks, ElasticSearch, relational and NoSQL databases, and data visualisation tools.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with stakeholders to identify opportunities for data science value.
  • Design, build, deploy and maintain advanced analytic and ML models.
  • Develop data visualisations for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Lead SDLC practices for analytics solutions.
  • Engineer and optimise large-scale datasets.
  • Evaluate ML and DL techniques for business problems.
  • Collaborate with Data Engineers/Architects to build analytics pipelines.
  • Ensure analytics products are secure, scalable and compliant.
  • Drive methodological improvements and coding standards.
  • Conduct peer reviews of code, models, and visualisations.
  • Support and mentor a team of 2 Data Scientists.
  • Act as SME across analytics initiatives.

The role

As a Senior Data Scientist, you will work closely with strategy, operational, and technology teams to identify opportunities where advanced analytics and machine learning can unlock business value. You'll lead the design, development, deployment, and continuous improvement of analytical models that support critical decisions across the organisation.You will combine deep technical expertise with strong stakeholder engagement skills, helping to bridge the gap between business challenges and innovative data-driven solutions. Alongside hands-on data science delivery, you'll mentor and support a team of two Data Scientists while helping shape best practices across the wider analytics function.

Key accountabilities
  • Partner with business stakeholders to identify opportunities where data science can deliver strategic and operational value.
  • Design, build, deploy and maintain advanced analytical and machine learning models.
  • Develop compelling data visualisations and insights for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Lead the implementation of robust software development lifecycle (SDLC) practices for analytics solutions.
  • Engineer, transform and optimise large-scale datasets with varying levels of volume, velocity and complexity.
  • Evaluate and apply the most appropriate statistical, machine learning and deep learning techniques for business problems.
  • Collaborate closely with Data Engineers, Data Architects and Data Managers to build reliable analytics pipelines.
  • Ensure all analytical products are secure, scalable, automated and compliant with governance standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement in analytical methodologies, coding standards and model performance.
  • Conduct peer reviews of code, models and visualisations to maintain high quality standards.
  • Support, mentor and develop a team of 2 Data Scientists.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, providing guidance across wider analytics initiatives.
Skills & experience
  • Expert knowledge of advanced analytic techniques (Statistics, Machine Learning, Deep Learning) and a demonstrable ability to evaluate and select the right approach for the nature of the problem to be solved.
  • Extensive experience of collecting, parsing, cleansing and analysing large data sets.
  • Open minded and demonstrates strong intellectual curiosity.
  • Has an interdisciplinary focus, using techniques and knowledge from across the scientific spectrum.
  • Extensive working knowledge of multiple relevant technologies such as DataBricks, Elastic search, Relational databases, No SQL databases, Data Visualisation tools (PowerBI, Tableau).
  • Extensive working knowledge of one or more relevant languages such as Python / R / SQL.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong communication skills to explain why the solutions you have produced are the right options.
  • Has excellent listening and questioning skills to understand business needs and technical designs.
