Job summary

BP in London is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to design, prototype, productionize, and maintain scalable data science products within a cross-disciplinary IT&S team. The role emphasizes actionable insights, rigorous data science practices, and collaboration with engineers and business partners.

Qualifications

  • Applied knowledge of data science tools and approaches across all data lifecycle stages.
  • Thorough understanding of the mathematical foundations of statistics and machine learning.
  • Development experience in Python, Go, Java, or C++.
  • Advanced SQL knowledge.
  • Knowledge of experimental design and analysis.
  • Deep knowledge of forecasting and optimization methods and algorithms.
  • Experience with large language models and AI tools.
  • Strong partner management skills and ability to lead large organizations through influence.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a cross-disciplinary team with data scientists, data engineers, software engineers, data managers, and business partners.
  • Build scalable, reusable data science products containing statistical or ML algorithms in collaboration with data and software engineers.
  • Carry out data analyses to produce actionable business insights.
  • Follow and advocate for data science procedures including design reviews, unit testing, monitoring, and documentation.
  • Present results to peers and senior management.
  • Contribute to improving developer velocity.
  • Mentor others.

Job description

Salary: £59,000 - 99,000 per year

Requirements:
  • MSc or PhD degree in a quantitative field.
  • Typically 5+ years of hands-on experience designing, planning, prototyping, productionizing, maintaining, and documenting reliable, scalable data science products in complex environments.
  • Applied knowledge of data science tools and approaches across all data lifecycle stages.
  • Thorough understanding of the mathematical foundations of statistics and machine learning.
  • Development experience in one or more object-oriented programming languages, such as Python, Go, Java, or C++.
  • Advanced SQL knowledge.
  • Knowledge of experimental design and analysis.
  • Deep knowledge of forecasting and optimization methods and algorithms, including experience with Linear, Logistic, Lasso, Ridge, GAM, and other machine learning algorithms.
  • Understanding of financial, energy, or commodity markets.
  • Experience using Claude or other generative AI tools and working with large language models to deliver analysis or engineer AI products.
  • Customer-centric, pragmatic approach, with a focus on value delivery and swift execution while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Strong partner management skills and ability to lead large organizations through influence.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
  • Experience with big data technologies such as Hadoop, Hive, and Spark is a plus.
  • No prior experience in the energy industry is required.
