Job summary

Google is seeking a Senior Data Center Power Protection Controls Engineer in London to define system-level architecture, perform engineering analyses and lead field testing for complex power protection schemes. You will investigate renewable energy integrations and spearhead control system innovations for data centers.

The role requires a strong background in protection and control engineering, with extensive HIL testing experience on RTDS/OPAL-RT, and a track record in critical infrastructure

Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in protection and control engineering or related critical infrastructure.
  • 5 years of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing with RTDS or OPAL-RT.

Responsibilities

  • Define data center system-level, product architecture, and research and development, while helping to develop operations and maintenance procedures for systems/processes.
  • Conduct engineering analysis and research designs and methods of data center equipment and facilities.
  • Ensure designs and installations meet requirements (e.g., predicted cooling, structural, operational concerns).
  • Investigate and integrate renewable power generation and carbon-free storage technologies, developing innovative ways to protect and control these new energy frontiers.
  • Act as the technical lead for execution and field testing teams, driving the commissioning efforts for complex power system protection schemes.

As a Power Protection and Controls Engineer at Google, you will play a crucial role in the Data Center Engineering team, which is dedicated to advancing the physical design of our data centers. Your responsibilities will include defining system-level architecture, conducting engineering analyses, and ensuring compliance with operational standards.

Your role will involve investigating and integrating renewable energy technologies, as well as leading field testing teams to implement complex power system protection schemes. You will be at the forefront of optimizing efficiencies and driving innovation in electrical and control systems.

  • 5 years of experience in Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing using platforms such as RTDS or OPAL-RT.
  • 5 years of experience in protection and control engineering.
  • Experience with mission-critical systems that operate continuously without failure, such as power generation and data centers.
