Job summary

SR2 | Socially Responsible Recruitment | Certified B Corporation™ is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer for propulsion-focused, autonomous systems projects. You will own FOC motor control, pull apart existing control stacks, and build capability from first principles on a UK-based startup trajectory.

Ideal candidates will have strong motor control, plant modelling, and HIL testing experience, with MATLAB/Simulink proficiency to implement advanced model-based control strategies.

Qualifications

• Strong expertise in motor control and FOC techniques.
• Experience with modelling and simulating dynamic systems.
• Hands-on experience in hardware-in-the-loop testing.

Responsibilities

• Own Field-Oriented Control for motor controllers and develop capabilities from first principles.

How do you go from controlling a single motor to controlling an autonomous vehicle?

That's ultimately the journey this role could take you on.

We're supporting a UK engineering start-up building electric propulsion technology for the next generation of autonomous systems.They've reached the point where they want to own their control technology rather than depend on supplier SDKs and existing control stacks.

That's where you come in.

Your first challenge will be taking ownership of Field-Oriented Control for their motor controllers. Understanding what's there, pulling it apart and developing their own capability from first principles.

Then things get more interesting.

We're looking for someone who's genuinely strong in:

• Field-Oriented Control / motor control
• MATLAB & Simulink
• Plant modelling from first principles
• System identification
• Model-based control
• HIL / physical testing

Experience with PMSM/BLDC motors, servo systems, robotics, gimbals, motorsport, aerospace or UAVs could all translate extremely well.

You don't need to come from defence

Youdo need to be someone who wants ownership, enjoys difficult physical control problems and would rather build the capability than integrate somebody else's.

The business is early-stage, the engineering problems are getting harder, and there's genuine opportunity to influence what gets built next.
