Job summary

Arup is seeking a Senior Contaminated Land Consultant in London to lead the delivery of contaminated land assessments for a range of clients, including private developers and public sector bodies.

You will work in a multi-disciplinary team of environmental, planning, engineering and urban design specialists, supervising juniors, managing projects, and delivering high-quality environmental consultancy across brownfield development.

Qualifications

  • Honours degree with Chartered status or working towards it.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental legislation relating to contaminated land.
  • Experience delivering contaminated land assessments and reports.
  • Experience managing junior staff and coordinating multi-disciplinary teams.

Arup’s Land Quality discipline forms part of the Specialist Environmental Services team, covering a range of environmental specialisms within the Environment, Climate and Sustainability portfolio. The land quality team coordinate, manage and produce contaminated land assessments, working with a variety of technical disciplines on a wide range of different types of development. The team have expertise in the assessment of ground contamination, excavated material reuse and waste management, environmental permitting, due diligence and water quality.

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.

The position is for a Senior Contaminated Land Consultant to work within our Environment, Climate and Sustainability group in London.You will lead delivery of contaminated land assessments for clients including private developers, public sector authorities and other organisations. You will be working in a multi-disciplinary environment alongside other environmental, planning, engineering and urban design specialists, and will work closely with technical disciplines to deliver high quality environmental consultancy services in contaminated land and brownfield development.

You’ll be mainly office based and may visit site when required.This may include managing ground investigations including supporting junior staff, working with ground investigation contractors and liaising with client teams.

You will be responsible for: Technical delivery of contaminated land assessments. Managing junior staff supporting the delivery of contaminated land assessments. Writing environmental reports. Project management activities including programming and budget control. Interfacing with multi-disciplinary project teams. Communicating and liaising with clients. Engaging and negotiating with stakeholders.

You will be a motivated, enthusiastic and competent individual with extensive environmental consultancy knowledge in the contaminated land field.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for individuals with the following skills:

  • Honours degree in a relevant subject. Member of a relevant institute (e.g. CIWEM, IES, Geological Society of London, RSC) and full Chartered status or working towards Chartered status.
  • Excellent understanding of environmental legislation relating to contaminated land, and experience of application of relevant legislation, policy and guidance in respect to assessment for a range of project types.
  • Ability to manage, direct and develop more junior staff and good analytical skills with a focus on finding solutions in relation to assessment, technical and project management issues.
  • Ability to work within a commercial environment, including client liaison, programme and time management, quality assurance and financial/budget control.
  • Knowledge of large multi-plot developments and management of existing remediation measures as new developments are brought forward (desirable).
  • You will also be motivated to develop others, contribute to the success of our business through work winning and business development, and grow your own leadership capability within a collaborative and supportive team.
