Job summary

ICF in London seeks a Senior Consultant – Nature and Environment to support Defra-related work, combining policy expertise with strong project management. You will lead technical delivery across biodiversity, nature recovery, and environmental policy, while coordinating multidisciplinary teams and managing client relationships.

The role involves developing monitoring/evaluation approaches, guiding evidence synthesis, and contributing to bids and new work mobilisation.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent professional experience in environmental policy, ecology, environmental science, social research, evaluation, economics or a related discipline.
• Experience in consulting, research, policy or programme delivery with responsibility for managing projects or workstreams.
• Knowledge of UK natural environment policy and delivery, including biodiversity, nature recovery and protected sites.
• Experience of monitoring, evaluation, applied research or evidence-based policy work.
• Strong project management skills: planning, resourcing, risk management, budget oversight and QA.
• Ability to contribute technically while overseeing delivery, performance and client requirements.
• Strong written and verbal communication for client-ready outputs.
• Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and external partners.

Responsibilities

• Contribute technical expertise to monitoring, evaluation, research and learning projects in the natural environment field.
• Design evaluation questions, theories of change, monitoring frameworks and evidence synthesis approaches.
• Undertake and oversee qualitative and quantitative research, ensuring robust outputs for policy audiences.
• Apply knowledge of UK environmental policy to interpret evidence and draft useful conclusions.
• Provide technical review and quality assurance for junior staff and partners.
• Manage a portfolio of nature- and environment-related projects with delivery planning and budgets.
• Mobilise new projects with governance, workplans and controls.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and ensure timely delivery and client reporting.
• Support business development, bids and reusable methods across the team.
