Balfour Beatty has been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage as part of the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project. The role is based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.

Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Senior Commercial Manager to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project.

What you'll be doing
  • Responsible for the financial management of the NZT MEH scope from inception and tendering through negotiation, contracting, and delivery.
  • Lead the commercial and financial success of the project as part of the project delivery team.
  • Cover a broad range of duties including risk management, procurement, contract management, financial reporting and supply chain management.
  • Develop and lead a commercial team; be a Chartered Member of the RICS, ICES or CIOB or working towards professional qualification; maintain CPD.
  • Adhere to governance requirements and maximise LEAN/digital opportunities.

Governance

  • Knowledge of and adherence to the company's governance requirements; maximise LEAN/digital opportunities.

Commercial Management

  • Ability to see the bigger picture and understand economic factors affecting the construction industry.
  • Awareness of dispute resolution options and techniques; liaise with legal experts as needed.
  • Prepare estimates and tender submissions; interpret specifications and preambles.
  • Represent the financial and contractual interests to the client in progress meetings; take initiative to respond to customer requirements.
  • Manage commercial aspects with suppliers, customers and stakeholders to keep the project on plan.
  • Coordinate buying, accounts, production control/planning, supply chain management and procurement techniques, estimating and surveying functions.
  • Manage and report on commercial risk and opportunity; manage disallowed costs.

Accountabilities Commercial Administration

  • Provide commercial input to buildability and value engineering reviews; feedback commercial data to planning and estimating; maximise digital opportunities.
  • Support tender and cost data reviews; prepare Target Cost for a project.
  • Coordinate the commercial team to identify and action programme issues; manage Earned Value Management and monthly cost/value reconciliations (CVR).
  • Report and explain the commercial aspects of a project; feed commercial data back to planning, estimating, marketing and sales.

Procurement

  • Establish client supply chain requirements and advise on form of contract and procurement arrangements.
  • Develop plans for resource procurement; oversee recruitment, development and retention of staff.

  • BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying or equivalent
  • Membership of RICS, ICES or CIOB (or working towards)
