Job summary

UBDS Group is seeking an experienced Senior Azure DevOps Engineer to design, build and improve secure, scalable cloud platforms and delivery pipelines for clients. This hands‑on role focuses on Microsoft Azure, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, automation and modern DevOps practices.

You will collaborate with Cloud Engineers, Architects and Security specialists to automate infrastructure, enhance engineering practices and enable rapid, secure deployments across complex environments.

Job description

As we continue to grow our cloud and engineering capabilities, we're looking for an experienced Senior Azure DevOps Engineer to design, build and improve secure, scalable cloud platforms and delivery pipelines for our clients.

This is a hands‑on engineering role with a strong focus on Microsoft Azure, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, automation and modern DevOps practices.

You'll work across complex client environments, collaborating with Cloud Engineers, Architects, Security specialists and delivery teams to automate infrastructure, improve engineering practices and enable teams to deploy services quickly, consistently and securely.

We're looking for someone with strong Azure and DevOps experience who can take ownership of technical challenges, make pragmatic engineering decisions and help establish high-quality engineering practices across delivery teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain secure and scalable Azure cloud environments.
• Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code using technologies such as Terraform and Bicep.
• Design, implement and optimise CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps.
• Automate the provisioning, configuration and deployment of cloud infrastructure and services.
• Build reusable infrastructure modules, deployment patterns and engineering components.
• Implement automated testing, quality controls and security checks within deployment pipelines.
• Apply DevSecOps principles, embedding security throughout the development and deployment lifecycle.
• Work with Architects and engineering teams to translate solution designs into deployable cloud platforms and services.
• Support the implementation of Azure networking, identity, security, compute, storage and platform services.
• Implement monitoring, logging, alerting and observability across cloud environments.
• Troubleshoot complex platform, deployment and infrastructure issues.
• Improve reliability, scalability and operational performance through automation and engineering best practice.
• Support containerised workloads and modern application platforms where appropriate.
• Work within appropriate governance, security and compliance requirements, particularly within regulated and secure environments.
• Contribute to technical documentation, runbooks, design decisions and knowledge sharing.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers within delivery teams.
• Identify opportunities to improve automation, engineering standards and reusable capability across UBDS Group.

Required Experience & Skills

• Significant hands‑on experience delivering solutions within Microsoft Azure.
• Strong experience with Azure DevOps, including CI/CD pipelines, repositories and associated tooling.
• Strong Infrastructure as Code experience using Terraform and/or Bicep.
• Experience designing and implementing automated cloud deployment pipelines.
• Strong understanding of Azure services, including networking, identity, compute, storage and security.
• Experience with Git and modern source‑control practices.
• Strong understanding of DevOps and DevSecOps principles and practices.
• Experience with scripting and automation using technologies such as PowerShell, Bash or Python.
• Experience implementing monitoring, logging and operational tooling within Azure environments.
• Understanding of cloud security principles, identity and access management, RBAC, secrets management and secure configuration.
• Experience troubleshooting complex infrastructure and deployment issues.
• Strong understanding of resilient, scalable and highly available cloud architecture.
• Experience working within Agile engineering and multidisciplinary delivery teams.
• Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable Experience

• Microsoft Azure certifications.
• HashiCorp Terraform certification or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience with Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) and container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with Azure Landing Zones and enterprise‑scale Azure environments.
• Experience with GitOps approaches and tooling.
• Experience with policy‑as‑code and automated governance.
• Experience with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights or equivalent observability tooling.
• Experience implementing automated security scanning within CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience working with Microsoft Entra ID.
• Experience with configuration management and automation tooling.
• Experience working within public sector, financial services or other regulated environments.
• Experience operating within environments subject to UK Government security requirements.
• Active UK Security Clearance (SC) or current eligibility to obtain and maintain SC clearance.

We're looking for an experienced engineer who combines strong Azure knowledge with an automation‑first mindset.

You'll be comfortable working hands‑on with Azure, Terraform, pipelines and code while also understanding the wider architecture, security and operational requirements of the solutions you're building.

You'll look for opportunities to automate rather than repeat manual processes, build reusable solutions rather than solve the same problem multiple times, and embed security and quality into engineering practices from the outset.

You won't need to be a specialist in every Azure service. You'll have strong depth across Azure and DevOps, sound engineering judgement and the ability to work with architects and specialists when deeper expertise is required.

Most importantly, you'll take ownership of technical problems and help teams deliver secure, reliable cloud solutions at pace.
