Overview

St Mary’s Hospital hosts a 32‑bed intensive care unit on the 9th floor. Each bed is fully equipped with modular monitoring and integrated IT (ICCA/ICIP) providing access to pathology, radiology and patient documentation. The unit is part of a busy tertiary referral, teaching and trauma centre.

Eligibility and Training Requirements

The fellowship is open to international medical graduates. Candidates must have a minimum of 1 year ICU experience and 6 months in acute/general medicine, anaesthetics or emergency medicine. Complete airway management independence is required. The role offers GMC sponsorship; IELTS or OET are fundamental for applicants.

Responsibilities
  • Provide day‑to‑day care to adult ICU patients as part of a team of consultants, core trainees, registrars and fellows.
  • Participate in daily multi‑specialty ward rounds with neurology, trauma and vascular surgeons.
  • Attend microbiology ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Review referrals from wards, ED and theatres and assist in their management.
  • Liaise with referring teams and other specialists.
  • Provide information to families and relatives as delegated by the on‑duty consultant.
Research, Teaching and Training
  • Participate in teaching and research opportunities provided by the department.
  • Enter patients into research trials as appropriate and assist the research team.
  • Develop research projects and enhance teaching skills, including bedside teaching of residents and undergraduates.
Clinical Governance
  • Participate in department quality and morbidity & mortality meetings.
  • Act on findings from clinical audit.
  • Collaborate with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to maintain high performance and quality.
  • Attend daily safety briefings and address concerns raised.
  • Comply with trust infection control policies relevant to the ICU.
  • Improve patient experience through effective communication with patients and families.
